Can you do a split?

Yes...and I am surprised that I still can. I was a cheerleader in high school and now 23 years later, I can still do them. I think flexibility can be attained to a great degree by stretching, but I also think that genetics plays a huge part. It's kind of like the people can roll their tongues. That's a genetic thing. I can do a split but I can't roll my tongue...haha.

Nope, never could, never will!

Can't say that I feel bad about it, either, because they have very little, if any, functional use (unless you are in California when "the big one" hits and are standing astride a fault line!);-)

Functional is great but sometimes we do these 'non-functional' things just for fun.:) Much of what I teach in yoga is not necessarily funtional but maintaining flexibility in all ranges of motion is never of no functional use. As a self proclaimed klutz doing the splits might occur spontaneously when I'm skating, rollerblading or negotiating an icey walkway. Having good end range in all kinetic chains will lessen my chances of muscle strain. I may never actually do a split but I'll keep my adductors flexible and at-the-ready by giving it a go once in a while;-)

Take Care
Laurie:)
