Can you do a split?

There was a thread about this on another forum, so I'm curious: how many of you uber-fit ladies can actually do a split? I have NOT done one since I was a cheerleader in 10th grade (the only year I found myself enthusiastic enough to be one, lol).

I wonder if you can re-train your legs to do that? I can only imagine the flexibility required...

Marie

Yes, but only the kind where you have one leg in front and the other behind, not the kind with your legs out to the side.:)

I thought about this the other day while doing a yoga workout (Eoin finn) that had the splits in it. I can't even come close to doing it. LOL! I used to beable to do "walking splits" across the room back in my gymnastics day, if you can imagine. I bet we could re-train to do it, but it might take along time. I loved being that flexible.
Here is my split now /\ compared to then ____ LOL!!!

Shelley, we called the legs out to the side, the straddle.

No! I think it's still possible if you keep stretching. Could be a good goal for me to shoot for.

Before my last pregnancy I was doing a lot of yoga, and could almost do a front-back split; I was about an inch off the floor. I hope to be able to get back to that level in the next year or so, once I can get serious about yoga again. It's a super hamstring, hip flexor, and glute/lower back stretch.

Cheers,
Sandra

Yes. I re-trained my body to do them a few years back. I just stretched after each workout and held as much of a split as I could do at the time for a minute of so...until I was all the way down!

So yes, you can teach an old dog old and forgotten tricks!:7

No way. I don't do enough stretching & I do pretty heavy lifting with my legs. I can barely do yoga without falling over. :+

I do heavy lifting and at almost 45 can do splits with either leg leading and center splits. I believe it is just the way I am made. Some people are more flexible than others, I really don't have to work at it, just the stretching at the end of videos.

I used to be able to do it - I may try it later, and I'll let you know!

Hmmm.... I'm at work and I'm really tempted to get down and try it again, but I better not - I may scare my co-workers if I get stuck or scream in pain! I'll wait til I get home to try it cuz now you've got ME wondering if I can still do it! :p

I can do the splits with the bananas and ice cream. Do those count? :p

I can do a full right leg split, and a full straddle split:7 But my leftleg suxx( , maybe because I'm 14 years old and a gymnast. I always have a good and bad side on almost everything, as almost everyone else. I think you could re-train yourself into a split again. It's possible.

:)

I've been able to do them since I was 3. I think if you're trained from an early age and you keep up the fitness and flexibility, it never really goes away. It might be a little harder from time to time
:)

Sparrow, me, too! :) Thanks for the laugh...

No way. Never have and never will, but not for lack of trying. I'm lucky to maintain what flexibility I have.

Oh my, I sure can.

Before I started my healthy eating craze, I would indulge with alcohol on the weekends with friends and as soon as I became slightly drunk, I would do splits. I am definitely a happy drunk.

Hey Marie, I like a challenge:) I just attempted a front back split and my groin was about 3 inches off of the floor. I'm going to keep at this and am curious how much lower I'll get when I'm nice and warmed up. We can definitely grow into these things. I'm 44, a year and a half a go I couldn't do a Hindi or birthing squat with my feet flat, now I can hang out there quite comfortably, works great in the garden :+ Just what I needed, a new challenge, my kids already think I'm nuts!:p

Take Care
Laurie:)
