Can we talk "Cutting Boards"?

hey all,

well, i'm in the market for a new cutting board...my old boos maple one which i loved, cracked when dropped while moving this past year. and before i go ahead and get a reaplacement..i was wondering if anybody had any thoughts regarding alternative surfaces..."bamboo", in particular.

anybody have one? is it easier to care for, less bacteria issues? or does somebody else have an alternative surface you favor? i've tried those plastic antibacterial white ones, but don't care for them.

thanks so much!

RE: Can we talk

Plastic is recommended for sanitary reasons. I have three plastic cutting boards and then a 4' x 2' piece of Chestnut countertop that is a cutting board...so I use wood and plastic. I cut all meats on the plastic ones.

Annwe...I would be concerned that using Corian as a cutting surface would dull your knives? Is that a problem for you?

RE: Can we talk

I have 2 cutting boards one is wood & the other one is plastic in yellow from William Sonoma. I use the plastic one for cutting my poultry. Kathy:D

RE: Can we talk

I use wood for bread and also as a platter for serving cheese, breads, and crackers, etc. I have 2 plastic cutting boards--one is for meat, the other for vegetables.

RE: Can we talk

hmm...you're causing me to reconsider plastic. are all plastic boards "created equal"??? i was gonna hit william sonoma, but rather than pay 'full price' for a plastic board, i figure it it's all the same stuff..when i hit ross for my video searches, i could pick up a plastic cutting board there?!

on the bamboo wood board, anybody tried this, as well?

thanks so much!

RE: Can we talk

I just happen to love the William Sonoma one b/c of the width & length & the durability its very sturdy. Its dishwasher safe too. All plastic cutting boards are not "created equal" IMO. Haven't tried any bamboo so can't help you on that. Kathy:D

RE: Can we talk

I have an assortment of plastic and corian but no wood. The synthetic boards seem more sanitary and I can put them in the dishwasher. If I had to pick, I prefer plastic. The reason is that the corian is very hard and I suspect it will dull knives faster.
