Can someone tell me about glucosamine?

I've been experiencing pain in my knees. At first it was my right knee, but now I'm feeling a twinge in my left knee. I've heard people talk about glucosamine and was wondering when was the best time to take the supplement. Should I take it before or after a workout, and can I take it on an empty stomach.

Its actually an amino acid and it works in tandem with Vitamin C and the amino acid Lysine. I used to take glucosamine (1,500 mg), but have since switched to MSM (1,000 mg) and salmon/fish oil (3,000 mg), which works better for me. I would take glucosamine in the sulfate form and now there are even liquid products that are supposedly superior because of absorption rates, but I'm not sure that has been proven. You always read that glucosamine doesn't work in clinical trials, but lots of people swear it works for them. I've also seen that high-priced versions aren't as good as the Cosco brand, which was rated number one by Consumer Reports.
