Can I use a jpeg picture?

I am having the hardest time trying to personalize my avatar. I only have jpeg pictures of myself. Is it possible to use these? If so, how do I do it? And feel free to "talk to me like I'm a 5 year old"
I am quite computer challenged.

Before you can post a pic you have to upload it to a host program. Like photobucket.com or picturetrail.com, which are free. Once you have an account with them they will have info about how to post, or come back and ask, most all of us had trouble at first...
