Can Doctors Do This?

Here is my question. Say you meet a cute doctor, you like him and he likes you too. Can he go into your "medical history file" and find out all the ailments you ever had? How much medical history do they have access to?

Please dont ask me why I want to know. Its not for me, I am married.

Love,

Madonna

The doctor would have access to whatever records are on file in that office. There would be no reason for him to check former doctor's offices (if they aren't in the same practice). This is how people go "doc shopping" when they want to play the system. Don't like the answer you get when you go for a fit for duty test? Then go on to the next doctor.....(and only give him limited information....)x(

due to the very strict confidentiality laws put into effect, if he had access because you were a patient (only records that that office has) then he could look at them i believe. if he were to obtain other records he would have to have a signed release. plus, if he's just looking to look, that's unethical if you ask me.

Well, there's also the "continuity of care" aspect going on, too. If he is looking into your case because he is caring for you in ANY aspect of your medical care, and you are seeing him for care than he can ask any doctor that might be involved with you for info, so he can therefore provide an all-encompassing level of care and treatment.

The new HIPPA laws are very strict & rigid, but in the medical community, there has to be a certain avenue of communication so that in the long run you care is not impeded.

But no, not just any doctor can look up your medical files.

What do you mean by "like"? If you mean attracted and considering dating, then I don't think he can go into your medical history file. If he's going to be treating you, then he should have access to your entire medical history. There are privacy laws.
