I know alot of you are dog lovers......i have been wanting to get involved with volunteering, but i wondered if any of you do this kind of volunteer work.....do you know if i can volunteer to help transport dogs and that sort of thing, or do you have to be able to house them too.....i can't do that part b/c i have 2 dogs already and they are very territorial.....

TIA

I love your 'do what I can' attitude! I don't think anyone ever turns down a volunteer. So much depends on the rescue group you choose and where you live. Some are busier than others but I'm sure any group would appreciate having someone on call who's willing to transport dogs.

Go to petfinder.com , click shelter & rescue groups, enter your zip then try calling around to offer your help. Good for you, Jes.

Jes, this is great. I'm a volunteer w/ www.glenhighlandfarm.com, a border collie rescue in the northeast. There are many things you can do to help a rescue organization besides fostering dogs. For example, I prowl petfinder every day for my state (NY) and contact shelters who have BCs listed. Sometimes I go to shelters to meet dogs and do a temperament test, take photos etc. Another job is dealing w/ people who are relinquishing their dogs. We have one volunteer who maintains and upgrades our website regularly. Transport is another wonderful way to help.
The suggestion to check out rescue groups on petfind and see what appeals to you is a good one. Good luck.

Yahoogroups used to have several rescue transport groups. Try searching there. I volunteer mostly for the two breeds I'm involved with, Dobes and Vizslas.

You could also contact local dog clubs in your area to see if they need help.

Thanks everyone! i looked on petfinder.com, but there aren't currently any groups in my area. i am going to call Petsmart and the humane society and see if they can tell me who needs help!

If you are looking for specific breeds, you can go to their national club webiste and find groups. Altho not all groups are the "same". Last night y DH told me about a white boxer in our area that has been wandering for 2 months...instead of calling me then when he saw her :( I am going to go out and see if I can find her. The Boxer rescues in my area aren't very helpful to say the least. Unfortunately, I'll have to take her to a shelter but it beats being starved or possibly hit.
