Can a DVD Player go Bad?---sorry kind of long

I have several of Cathe's workouts now on DVD: Intensity Series, BB Series, Slow & Heavy, CTX Series they all play fine, wonderful, groovey on my DVD player. Yesterday I received the Classics DVD and tried to preview it. The player read the disk--I got the copyright warnings and the main menu came up, but when I pressed play, nothing happened. I tried each of the three workouts and nothing would happen. Then I tried playing the "heart rate check"--THAT played! I then decided to go the chapters section and played the warmup--the whole workout played. I was half way through the second workout, then it just stopped! Froze, wouldn't play any more. I ejected the disk to check it, it was clean, put it back in then I got an error message that that disk couldn't be read in my player. I gave up and decided to preview the bonus combo on the Pyramids DVD...that played fine until I got to the streching--my picture started breaking up to the point where you couldn't see what was going on any more. While I've never watched the bonus combo before I have used that DVD many times to to the Upper and Lower Pyramid workouts. So, this is a long way of asking, can a DVD player go bad...does it (the player) need cleaning? Should I chuck it all and by a new Sony DVD Recorder? :)

Donna, my opinion is yes, DVD players can go bad, a mentally retarded woman I work with and I do shopping for so I bought her first DVD player, it went bad not long after I bought it, it would play ok for a while, then all of a sudden the TV would have multi colors on the screen kinds of blinking, it was strange. Ended up getting her a new one........... Rhonda

Okay! :) :) :) :) I've been wanting an EXCUSE for buying a new one! Looks like this may be it! What you described it exactly what happened...blocks of mutlicolored patterns.

When my very first player (a Panasonic I bought in June 2001) died it started breaking up the picture into multicoloured squares. I bought a new one in October 2003. Hope it lasts longer than my old one.

I have two brand new players that we got for Christmas one for bedroom and sunroom, and a player in our living room that we got last year that has not been used very often. I do not have trouble with any movies on these players however the problems you guys are having happenes on my STep Jump and Pump on all three players, right when the kung fu fighting song comes on and some of the other body blast premixes, sometimes I get the colored squares sometimes it just freezes. I know it is not possible that all three players were faulty, one is a Sony, one is govideo and one is a walmart cheapie. I have put the DVD under water and sometimes it will play and sometimes it won't, I even put it in my sons xbox and it worked fine last night but I need to try it several times as it did not mess up the first time it was played on the others, I hope/pray that the DVD will not mess up the hardware on the players?? Is it possible that they are more advanced than what these players can handle? I absolutely love these DVD's and all of them played fine the first time through so I did not return them, I have had for a couple weeks and am just know seeing these issues. Also when I select premixes on any of my players it never goes past the pause for cardio ect. that is suppose to take 10-15 seconds and then move on does not work I have counted to 30 last night and I have to manually skip/forward to the next section. I don't think that is suppose to happen. I hate to be troublesome just confused if this is the norm with DVD's this advance, these are my first set of Cathe DVD's and it is not my player, we are talking about 3 different players.?????? What do you guys think?

Donna, I am so sorry to confuse you :) I would just try a movie or two and see if it happens to them before I purchased another player. I am sorry my reply was so long I am curious if other people are experiencing the same issues or is it just that the DVD's I received are defective?

I tried Step Pump and Jump again this morning on my sons x-box and it played perfect it automatically advances past the pauses for cardio and weights ect. this is what I will be using for my body blast tapes works great. I was so excited because these are absolutely the best workout tapes I have ever had but I was getting frustrated with the quirks I was having.

Hi!

I bought Gin Miller's Simply Circuit DVD about a year ago. I tried to play it on my older Sony DVD player and it simply fried my player. I could not use this player to play anything else, ever! I found out later that this particular DVD is a DVD-R and my older Sony did not support this type of DVD. Perhaps I could have burned the fireware, from Sony.com, to a CD and fix the player, but we gave it to my step-son and I told him to try doing that to fix it. I could play the DVD on my inexpensive Aiwa DVD player and my Panasonic player, both of which are newer players. I do run into problems with it on the Panasonic, so I don't try to play it anymore (plus, I'm not that crazy about the workout). The problem with this DVD is I wouldn't try to sell or trade it for fear I would pass on the problem to someone else. I realized what the problem with it was so long after I bought it that I haven't tried contacting Gin's customer service for replacement, etc.

I tried programming a workout from Supersets the other day and when I pushed play it would just skip through each chapter. It was really strange. I just used the mix and match feature and did what I wanted to do, plus it gave me some extra time to set up for the next segment.

Like everyone else, I would have never thought we would run into problems with different DVDs. Everyone of my Cathe DVDs play fine but the BB Series are the only DVDs that I run into little glitches with. Sticking on the insert cards, skipping through chapters after programming. I did experience some defragmenting on my CK DVD, but, after I took my VCR off of the top of my DVD player, it works fine. (I thought maybe my DVD player was overheating due to the VCR covering the vent on the DVD player).

Sorry so long. There have been numerous people that have had problems with DVDs. Let's just hope after all of the money we have invested in DVDs that they will hold out and last!

Take care!

Thanks Vicki, I hope that I have not fried any of my players, but I bought extended warranties and they are new so I should be covered.
I just wish we knew what player was necessary ect. before we purchase advanced dvd's I know someone suggested that you take the dvd with you when purchasing a player but mine played fine the first time so this would not have helped. Most of my issues are in the premixes though and it will take months to play all of them and see which ones do not work on which players?? So far having good luck with my childs xbox, seems to work the best on the xbox!1

And the SAGA continues!!! Arrrrgggg!

Okay today I was all in the mood to do Kick, Punch & Crunch--I did it last week and it was sooo fun--well, today it wouldn't read! Not at all! I pulled out another Cathe workout--that wouldn't read either. Then I pulled out my old Firm Super Cardio--that wouldn't work either! Then Super Cardio Sculpt--nope--got the same jumped colored squares. I've used the Firm DVDs dozens of times with no problems. I took my newest Cathe (the one that started this thread, LOL) to my mom's house to see if it would play on her player--it did, no problems (she has a newer player/VCR combo). Mine is a Panasonic, which I bought from a friend who lives in Taiwan--he bought it, but discovered that in Taiwan they use a different format...so I got it basically new, for pretty cheap. I think I've had it at least three years maybe four--can't really remember... All I can say is--All I wanted to do was workout this morning...arrggg! Good thing I still have a bag of videos I've replaced onto DVD and was able to scrounge the Super Cardio video out of there to do. Unfortunately I don't have any of Cathe's workouts on video...I may have to do that with my absolute favorites just in case! Anyway the Sony DVD recorder I've looked at plays three different formats...I'm leaning more towards that every minute! :) :) :) Funny thing is that last night I watched a DVD my friend sent me of a TV show--I watched all six episodes on that disk just fine--three hours worth!

RE: And the SAGA continues!!! Arrrrgggg!

Donna -- if you can burn onto a CD, try going to Panasonic's website and burn the fireware to your DVD player and load that into your DVD player and see if that will fix the problem. Technology can be so frustrating!

As far as the Sony DVD Recorder goes, I have one and love it! The videos I have recorded turned out better than the original video. The TV programs I have recorded turn out really good, too. DVD playback with the Cinema Scan produces a really clear, crisp picture.

So sorry you are having these problems. DH and I were discussing this morning what they will come up with next!?! Should be interesting.

Take care,

Vickie, I think I read your review on another thread about the Sony...I've kind of been keeping my eye on it since then. I can burn CDs at home and CDs/DVDs at work. I'll do that tomorrow!
