Calorie Question

I have a question about these products that say they have so many calories but the low calorie on the box is only because they have subtracted the fiber calories.

For example:

There is a pasta that has 130 calories per serving. It has 42g carbs and 18g fiber and 7g of protein. Clearly that adds up to more than 130 calories. Just the carb calories alone are 168.

If you are watching your calories in order to lose weight don't you think one should count ALL the calories or is this subtracting fiber calories true and those calories don't count? Sounds too good to be true to me.

What do you guys think, know or have experienced?

Thanks,
Sharon

I've never heard of this. I know if you subtract fiber I believe from the carbs then that gives you a "net carb count" but I don't know what kind of difference that makes either. I've never heard of the calorie thing. I go by the label. If it says it has 100 cals per serving that's what I use regardless of the fiber. Same with carbs.

Ha! On the purple or yellow spagetti box (I can't recall, I switch btwn Ronzoni Smart Taste and Barilla Plus) I don't have one in front of me, it gives 2 different serving sizes. What's a serving??? The nutritional info gives one thing - something like 7 servings per box, but the prep instructions say to make the whole box for 4 servings???? I'm inclined to belive the nutritional info is correct, but someone needs to proofread their box. I wonder if one is the govt standard serving, and the other is the what people normally eat serving? But I could see where that could confuse people. If they go by the prep instructions, they are eating 2x as much, but I bet only counting 1 servings worth of cals, fiber, etc. I need to find the box. I should send them an email or call the 800#.

WW points system factors fiber content in food, so that if a food is high fiber, you get to eat more because it has less points. This has resulted in lots of people adding Benefiber to their meals to "cheat" the system. If you are counting just carbs, you may be able to use the fiber to your advantage and count net carbs, but personally, I think that counting calories is better and that includes all calories, even in high fiber foods.

Have you looked up the calories on an online calorie counter, like My Fitness Pal?
