Calorie free foods

So my Jewel has a brand of foods called "Calorie Free" They make salad dressing, ice cream topping, condiments and things like that. The main ingredient in all of them is water, followed up w/ spices, flavoring, and Splenda. Then theres a little *** and a disclaimer that these contain minimal calories or fractions of calories. Has anyone ever tried this stuff? Seems a little weird and chemically/processed to me. I think I'd rather have a square of real chocolate than a whole jar of "calorie free fudge sauce" Whats the verdict on this stuff????

Hi Nan,

I think I know the brand your talking about, it's "Walden Farms" right? I occasionally use the pancake syrup and ranch sauce. I know that some do not agree with eating products with Splenda but I've never had a bad side effect or anything. Nothing could take the place of real chocolate. Now I'm craving some :9 and luckily have nothing in the house.

Take Care,
Chastity

Sounds weird to me. I read they did a study about using real dressing (in small amounts) on your salads/versus using fat free dressing. Your body absorbs the nutrients in your salad when you use the real stuff, as opposed to not absorbing as many nutrients using the fake. Not sure about the percentages here, but here is what I do.

I buy light ice cream or frozen yoogurt/Skinny Cows too to save calories. But with my dressings? I use the real stuff, pour a small amount on the side and dip my fork into the dressing then into the salad. You get the flavor, without making your salad "wet" with fat and calories!

I have not seen the Walden Farms foods, I might try them and see for myself though! Just my two cents.:)

I don't know about the calorie free foods, but I CANNOT use full fat dressing. I use the FF because a small amount of the regular stuff and dipping it into my salad just won't work for me. I like more dressing.

I use Splenda on a daily basis, several times per day in my coffee. I am saving countless calories a day having switched from sugar. I realize it's probably THE MOST chemically proccessed food of all but I am not willing to give up my coffee and don't need the extra cals from the sugar. I also buy fat free half and half which I am pretty sure is fake and proccessed to death!

My point it, when you are dealing with things like sweeteners, condiments, icecream toppings and the like...how much do you really use? Is it enough to honestly worry about it? Not in my book.

I try to eat clean but am not super strict about it. As much as I want to consume a healthy diet I also want to be happy and I know that if I took EVERTHING that wasn't clean out of my diet I would be a very cranky girl. :-(

It's all about moderation if you ask me. No one is perfect and everyone deserves to "cheat" a little.

I say just try the stuff! If you like it I don't see the harm in buying some on occassion...JHMO ofcourse.:)

Nan, I don't know the brand, so I can't say for sure, but such calorie-free products sound suspicious to me. I think of it this way:
When you put some Splenda into your coffee, the coffee is still the consistency of water, right? So what do they use to give the salad dressing or ice cream topping that thick consistency that has NO calories? Either they are using a ridiculous amount of Splenda or some other substance (likely to be sorbitol or manitol) in great quantity.

I agree with Wendy that a teaspoon of Splenda in your coffee is no big deal, but these products are not just SWEETENED WITH Splenda, they CONSIST OF non-food ingredients. Chances are, the products will make you feel a bit sick because it's not food, and your body can't digest it well.

Just my two cents. I stay stick with "low-calorie" and forget about "calorie-free" foods. Calorie-free only makes sense for beverages.

I bought a bunch of Walden stuff a long time ago - salad dressing, chocolate sauce and I don't remember what else. It is AWFUL!!!!!
I use Splenda on my cereal and on fruits like strawberries, so it's not that it's got Splenda in it. Whatever else they put in it is terrible!
