Calling all Hypoglycemics!

I am wondering who else here suffers from low blood sugar? I was diagnosed about 3 years ago and still find myself sometimes struggling with my diet. I get so sick of eating the same foods all the time, and also sometimes find it difficult to find enough of the right things to eat each day, especially when working out and my appetite is bigger! I'd love to share with those who suffer from this condition some ideas on diet, how you cope, etc.

Thanks!

My dad has it. It used to be much worse when he was younger (he's 60 now), but sometimes he still has attacks, if he's not careful.

I'm not sure why you have to eat the same foods all the time. My understanding is that you just need to be careful to eat smaller meals, spaced out throughout the day, with enough good carbs and protein to keep your blood sugar level. Why do you have a hard time finding the right things to eat?

I'm not an expert on this, so some of my questions are to help me understand. But when my dad's problem was really bad, he never seemed to have trouble finding the right sorts of things to eat.

Hi Shannon!
Thanks for the reply! Sometimes I think maybe it's me that doesn't fully understand what I need to do to take care of my condition! :)

I do eat small, frequent meals which consist of proteins and good carbs. But I guess what I meant by eating the same things all the time is that there are only so many proteins I can add to my meals. That is what I stuggle with. My "protein" portions consist of nuts, cheese, peanut butter, yogurts (most have TOO MUCH sugar!!), eggs, protein bars (which tend to have too many calories!!) and meats with dinner... but every day, which is what gets old for me. I have to eat something every 2 hours or I start to get dizzy/shaky/blurry vision, etc. The earlier I get up in the morning and the later I get to bed at night on certain days makes it worse because I've already eaten SO MUCH throughout the day, that I run out of appropriate "snacks" without eating the same thing twice.

I am wondering, and am almost sure, that there are other foods out there that I don't know I can eat. I've seen nutritionists before, but they don't seem to tell me anything more than I already know. I guess I'm looking for what I don't know! :)

Well, I'm not a nutritionist, so I sure can't offer you any professional advice. But really, it looks to me like you do have a pretty good variety of food.

I expect we all eat a lot of the same things over and over. I know I do. Actually, I kind of like my own food routine, because I know I can usually count on it to get me through the day - and besides, it tastes good! :9

I know your situation is different, but I honestly wouldn't worry that you're eating too much of the same thing. It sounds pretty balanced. If you're concerned about sugar in yogurt, look for the plain stuff and then add in sugar to your taste - or just add fresh fruit and let that sweeten the yogurt.

And definitely do not worry about eating "too much." You have a medical condition that you need to control, first and foremost. A few extra calories are nothing to worry about, as long as you don't pass out, right???

Good luck, and be healthy! :7
