Callanetics?

Hello everyone, I hope you're all having a lovely evening. Just wondering if anyone has tried this. Any opinions? Thoughts, reviews etc will be very welcome. :)

I used to do Callanetics in the 80s. I feel the only way it is useful is if you are recovering from an injury and have been told by a doctor to not use weights. Having said that, the leg movements can be integrated into a more intense workout. There is one movement where you are sitting on your knees and you slowly circle your hips as you rise up. It's pretty tough, but nothing special.

Basically, Callanetics is comprised of slow small movements, focusing on isometric contractions. Callan Pinkney is very subdued and quiet and the production quality is fairly low, if those things are important to you.

I enjoyed it in the 80s but since there are so many more advanced workouts nowadays, it feels superfluous.

HTH,
Lunacat :)

I used to do Callanetics in the 80's as well. Lunacat I remember that movement you described with the hips. I just recently sold my two Callanetics tapes on eBay.

Lunacat described the w/o perfectly.

Hi Eva,

I just bought Super Callanetics (used VHS, through Amazon) and I've used it 6 times within a week and a half. I love it! It is super tough. My abs have never been so flat! And I'm getting those 2 lines down the sides of my stomach. My thighs are slimming, also. The only cardio I've done is walking daily. This new routine of mine was a change from my high intensity, running 5x a week routine. I've noticed my appetite is smaller, also. According to the reviews I've read, Super Callanetics is different from the original in that it spends less time setting you up. Rather, there is a 20 minute section in the beginning where she demonstrates each exercise and shows you proper form. Then during the workout, you move quickly through the exercises. I prefer it this way, since once you know the set up, you don't have to waste time hearing her talk. Plus, I add this on after walking, so I'm already warmed up, and I skip the warm-up stretches in the beginning. (There are additional stretches throughout.) So the actual workout is probably 45-50 minutes without the warm-up stretches, and about an hour with. According to reviews, Super encompasses all, and more, of the exercises from the original. I'd say if you are already relatively fit, you can just buy Super and work up to all the reps.

Hope that helps,
Elaine

PS Read more reviews through videofitness.com (search their forum) or Amazon, which have a ton of reviews.

Callanetics is VERY effective for tightening the lower body and for increasing flexibility. If you go to www.videofitness.com, there are reviews, and also discussion threads in the forum that give a lot more info.

Thank you for your posts everyone. I know the callanetics is probably a bit dated, it's just that I haden't heard of it before and someone recomended it for lower body toning. I read loads of good reviews and just wanted to get your opinions aswell. I know you all have good taste (being in the Cathe forum and all!) Thanks again and enjoy your day. :)
