Butter Spray Betrayal

I recently discovered I've been heavy-handed with "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter Spray" that has 0 calories per 5 sprays. I've gotten carried away over time spraying uh way, way too much. I found an article that said 25 sprays = 2 grams of fat and so on!!

Since I have cut back on butter spray, I have lost weight!

I am really feeling stupid. I exercise 6 days a week, (cardio) and weights 2-3 times a week and have gotten good results, and eat a mostly vegan diet. But since I have restrained on the butter spray, I have really been approaching my goals.

Has anyone experienced this, discovering some hidden thing that was stalling weight loss efforts? I feel like I am really careful and yet I jumped on the magic spray, dousing broccoli in a few too many spritzes.........

Here's what I found from this website.

I looked other places, too and it seems like it's true.

My husband (who's trying to lose weight, too) and I think that because 5 sprays is under .5 g of fat, maybe they do not have to list it. In the two weeks since discovering this, I have changed nothing else in exercise and eating and I definitely have felt like I am back in the weight loss groove.

Oh well, live and learn?? -Barb:) :)

Dear Spraying,

The "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" spray has ZERO calories if you use just a few spritzes. However, if you do what most of us do and spray to your heart's content, you can rack up calories and fat grams pretty quickly. Here's the scoop: 12.5 sprays is 10 calories and 1 gram of fat, 25 sprays (1 teaspoon) is 20 calories and 2 grams of fat, and 37.5 sprays is 30 calories and 3 grams of fat. In case you're curious, the entire bottle contains 900 calories and 90 grams of fat! Helpful hint: When it comes to this stuff, stick with spraying as opposed to pouring

I'm guilty of this spray butter thing too! BAD! I use it almost every single night on my hot air popcorn, sprayed with butter spray and COVERED in salt (also BAD). I'm trying to beat the habit. Those calories really add up over time!

>Then how can they label it 0% fat.

Same way that manufacturers can label a product that contains partially hydrogenated oil as "Trans fat free": labeling loopholes. They can always round down if the per-serving amount is less than .5 gm. But if you use 3 servings, it could end up being 1.2 grams (.4 grams per serving).

Definintely not a loophole that is of service to the consumer.

Thanks for the support everyone!
It's a live and learn thing. It's frustrating to be really trying hard to exercise a lot -- but be balanced -- use strength training -- but be careful and eat a near vegan diet -- but be moderate and discover that common sense can easily be betrayed by the wish for a magic answer!

Candi -- I know it's my fault, but I thought "butter spray betrayal" made for a catchy subject line. I'm well aware it was my finger on the trigger!!!!!

Hey, Barb. A friend of mine keeps using this as a mantra, "food and exercise...separate yet EQUAL". I keep that in mind on the days I take as rest days or can't get a workout in. I fall into the bad habit of relying on my extra calories burned so I can have a few extra calories intake by days' end.

I find that Butter Buds or Molly McButter are good butter substitutes.

I've used soy sauce on popcorn instead of the spray butter and it works pretty well, believe it or not! Kind of moist, very salty-- what more does popcorn need? :9

Barb,

Just wanted to make you VERY aware that you are responsible. I believe the more accountable we are...the more control we have. Well, it sounds good anyway x( ;)

Check out the sodium levels on that butter spray...definately enough to cause your body to hang onto extra water (which is NOT weight-less)...especially if you are using it more than sparingly.

You must've been using a lot of butter spray if it made that big a difference.

Kristy

I solemnly swear that I am up to no good

A sprinkle of nutritional yeast on top (and goes very well with soy sauce).
