Anyone here have any experience with bunion surgery? I have a large one on my right foot that bothers me on and off and was wanting some insight on the advantages/disadvantages of sx or if anyone has had a bunionectomy...

Thanks,
Heidi
p.s. it sucks getting old:mad:

I've had both little toes operated on for hammer toe and they had to go back in and fix my left foot again for hammer toe and I also had a tailors bunion. They put a pin/post in when they fixed the bunion and when it healed the pin/post caused more pain then the original bunion. So I had to have another surgery to remove it.

After all that my feet are fine. I have orthotics and only buy shoes with good support and a wide toe box.

Good luck, and YES getting old sucks !

Yes I had a bunion repaired on my right foot. I had the worst kind you can have, the dr. had to cut my bone in 2 places and fuse back together with 3 pins on the outside of my foot. The surgery took about 3 hours was not bad at all. I really did not have any pain, I only took motrin maybe once or twice. The hardest part for me was being on crutches for 6 weeks. My right leg lost sooooo much muscle tone but it came back fairly fast when I got my boot off. I would not hesitate about having my other foot done. Really the only part that was at all painful was taking out the stitches. The scar on the top of my foot is about 3 inches long, but barely visible now. Oh and I also have a small amount of nerve damage in my big toe, nothing bad at all. My foot looks so much prettier and no pain, it was so worth it. If you have any more questions ask away.

I had both feet done. They did the whole breaking the bone and pinning it back together thing. I would say that the recovery was a bit painful, but nothing that I couldn't handle. I would definitely do it again. It was about 9 years ago that I had the 2nd one, and the bunion is coming back (I was told it wouldn't), so now I'm wearing orthotics that my podiatrist had made for me. I'm flat-footed and over-pronate. My 10 year old daughter also has the beginnings of them, so she's wearing orthotics too.
