building muscles

My husband and I just bought kayaks and today was the first time I paddled alone for any length of time. I was wondering what muscle group I could work on to maximize my paddling efforts. When I was behind my husband I could see his triceps working but it seemed like the top of my left shoulder was what was getting really tired. We do a lot of canoeing and now I realize he is picking up my slack lol. :D
