Good morning, thought I'd get the threat going for us! Oh, I woke up and thought it was Friday but no such luck. Bummer, but at least we're almost there!

Step Blast and the step only portion of SJ&P for me this morning. Makes for a nice long cardio segment. I was nearly wiped out by the end of that blast challenge though! Feeling a bit tired this morning, I may have to hit the hay early tonight to catch up.

Have weigh-in tonight at Weight Watchers--anyone else go? I have been debating back and forth. I have about 10# of fat I'd like to lose, but I wonder if I will get frustrated with the scale. If I do more and more Cathe, my overall weight may not change, but the inches will. I will keep going for now and see, it's not like I have that much muscle growth yet anyway! I'm far from "buff"!

How does everyone else monitor their diet? Are you just eating "clean" or do you count calories, eat when hungry, do a program? Just curious what is working or not working for us all.

Have a great day!

Morning Everyone,

Tonight will be Legs & Glutes Extreme on the premix with a segment of stretchmax added. I think I will need that stretching when I am done. :)

Thea, My diet consists of eating as clean as possible, and getting in 5 small meals a day. I average between 1500 & 1600 calories with 50% carbs, 30% protein, and 20% fat. I weight myself, but mostly rely on the measurements and how my pants feel on me. I like the way I feel and have seen great improvement in my endurance. Probably because I'm never hungry! :7 Just yesterday the mother of my DD's friend said I looked really good, and of course asked "what do you do?" When you tell them, there answer is "When do you have the time." I just tell them I have to, just so I can look in the mirror and not see that fat person anymore! :D

Have a great day!

Laurie

I did cardio and weights today. Today is a busy day...I have a class to take for work this am and then I have to sit at my in laws house and wait for a service repair man to come because they are out of town and their refridgerator broke then it is off to Appleton to pick up my car (it is getting repaired-new radiator) then back home again and to bed because I have 3 12 hour shifts at the hospital ahead of me (Fri, Sat, Sun). Keep up the good work Thea. For eating I do (or am trying to do a Zigzag eating pattern. Where is eat a certain amout of calories for 3 days then a higher calories on the 4th day then reduced calories again for 3 days and so on.)A person in this forum told me about it her name is Sarah "Ima" she is very informative. I'll let you known my results. I have only been doing it for about 2-3 weeks. It feels go so far. I hope all the Buff BAdgers are having a great day and great Cathe workouts.;)

I forgot some thing,
I also eat about 5 small meal a day. This helps me from becoming hungry. I also try to keep my carbs at about 40-50%, protein 30-40% and fats 20%....and lots of water

Thanks for your replies on nutrition/eating patterns! I have heard of staggering calories before as well, sounds like it keeps your body guessing which is good!

I just ordered a laptop and will be getting internet at home. I am hoping to find a way to log my calories and workouts so I can track them better. Anyone use any websites or software for this? I hate looking up calories in a book!

Laura--hope work goes well this weekend!

Good morning. I woke up yesterday thinking it was Thursday, so ever since my brain has been a day ahead! I'm going on vacation a week from today, so I'm getting impatient to leave :)
I didn't get up to work out early today. I'm trying to shift from mainly evening workouts to morning workouts, but it's not easy. Some weeks are better than others. So I'll work out after work tonight, and I plan to do Boot Camp and GS Legs.
Thea, my diet is always a challenge for me. It's been a struggle for as long as I can remember, and I'm only recently starting to deal with the issues I have with food and eating. I've found that when I get too into watching my diet, I get somewhat obsessive and end up feeling guilty about almost anything I eat. But like I said, that's something I'm working on remedying (is that a word?).
Anyway, I've tried several programs at different times to watch my diet. I initially lost weight with ediets, which was good for me because it told me exactly what to eat and what to buy. I think I lost about 12 pounds with ediets.
I also have tried Weight Watchers online a couple of times, but I haven't had much success with it. I've been thinking about trying the Core program.
My other success was with a dairy-weight loss study that I participated in while I was still working at Purdue. It was a three-month program where they were studying how an increase or decrease in servings of dairy affected weight loss. We were given guidelines on how many "exchanges" of fat, meat, fruit, veggie and dairy that we were supposed to have each day, and we kept food logs each day. We also met with a dietitian each week who went over our food logs and weighed and measured us. There were other more extensive tests a couple of times throughout the study. I lost about 15 pounds on that, and I was in the low dairy group. It was really a great program.
Now I just keep an eye on my weight and pay attention to how my pants fit. I can always tell if I'm feeling heavy in my legs, so if that happens I increase my workouts a little or watch my salt intake. I like to use fitday.com to track calories and make sure I'm not going too crazy.
Take care,
ellen

Ellen, Can you tell me more about this program?

I am doing WW right now too. What worked to lose weight before doesn't seem to work for me anymore so I am open for suggestions.

I did Cathe Muscle Endurance Upper premix this morning. This group is a good influence on me!

Fab40 (a/k/a Cynthia) started a separate thread about the Waukesha County get together. Hope to see you there.

Hello Buff Badgers, I did cardio and weights and Pure Strength legs. I wish I could eat as well as you guys. I eat lots of chocolate chips and other yucky stuff. I guess I have always been working out and as long as I do it I don't gain weight. I should eat better though. Maybe I'll watch what you eat and try some of those ideas. It sounds like everyone is getting their workouts in. Have a great day. Karen

Which program? Fitday or the dairy study?
Fitday.com is a Web site where you can keep track of your physical stats and goals; for me the main use is its food and exercise log. It's free online, but you can download a more extensive program for a charge.

The dairy study was done through the department of foods and nutrition at Purdue, where I went to school and used to work. People were divided into two groups: high and low dairy. Before the study started, they analyzed our diets to determine a suitable calorie intake that would allow for healthy weight loss. The theory was that the high-dairy group would lose more weight than the low-dairy group. We were given a certain number of nutrition exchanges for each food group that we were supposed to eat each day, and we kept a food and exercise log. The logs and weekly meetings with the dietitian were key for me, I think. A couple of times during the study they also did a bone density test, a cholesterol test and a couple of six-hour tests to determine changes in our resting metabolic rates. It was really interesting, but like I said, it was a nutrition study so it's not an ongoing thing. We got paid for it too, which was cool. I think they must have proved their theory, because now all the yogurt, milk, etc., commercials talk about how an increase in dairy servings can help with weight loss.

Hope that helps,
ellen

Hey Badger girls!

Thea-I am on week 2 of WW. Low carb wasn't cutting it for me anymore, after 19 months, so I joined WW online. You should be able to get food and exercise point trackers online. I put everything in each day to make sure I'm eating right. I live in East Troy, not close to a center, so I'm online only. Which is fine for me. I have no trouble keeping up with it. I used fitday every day before this. You'll be able to check in on weekends now with a laptop. :)

Jedi-I did cycling for awhile, but found I was letting loose a little TOO much on the up days lol. I'm glad it's working for you. Why do you have to take your car to Appleton to get repaired?

Marie-thanks for the heads up on the other thread. I'll look for it to get some details. Good job on getting a morning workout in!

Karen-at this point I am eating so much fruit I have no room left for chocolate chips! I'm still in the "honeymoon" stage of WW. I didn't eat much fruit at all on low carb, so it's like it's all new for me. I've been loving pears, peaches, plums, and grapes. Yum. Filling up with that stuff is better, obviously, but I do so love those sweets!

My workout will be this afternoon but I'm not sure what I'm doing yet. I'd like to do a total body weight workout. I have been focusing mostly on cardio the last month, so I know I've lost some strength. I love Muscle Max, but I'm not sure I'm up to it lol. We'll see......

KUPTGW everyone!

Did you guys hear the Lyniese Weeks from channel 4 died this morning? How sad. I always liked her. She was so happy and bubbly all the time. She had a disease that attacked her kidneys. She was so young. :(

Hey, Thea!

I had been doing Weight Watchers online for a year now and just kept losing and gaining the same 5 pounds. I didn't want to go to a meeting because of their emphasis on the scale like you said. I also calculated my protein grams and found I was much lower than I had been 5 years ago when I did Body for Life and lost 20 pounds and gains ton of muscle definition.

So, realizing that WW wasn't doing it for me, I started back on Body for Life - just the eating plan, not the exercise regime. I am proud to report I've lost 5 pounds since the roadtrip 2 weeks ago! Yahoo! I was tickled pink this morning when I hopped on the scale not expecting much since it's also TTOTM. I've finally broken through my plateau and feel I'm on the right track now.

Wow, you did Step Blast plus the step from SJP! I've never tried that premix partially because of time but also because I know I'd be toast for the rest of the day. I'm impressed.

I did a 30 minute jog this morning plus 1 Coremax segment and 1 Stretchmax segment. Tomorrow it's LowMax!

Sue

Nope, didn't here about this either. ;( I was always impressed by her reporting and how positive she was about her illness.

Laurie

Sue,
How does Body for Life eating differ from WW? I go mostly for the meetings and accountability. Also get some ideas for healthier cooking.

I am really looking forward to meeting you and other BBs! It sounds like we have many of the same concerns and goals.

Are you all Packer fans too? :)

Isn't that like a LAW or something Marie? That you HAVE to be? LOL

Thanks for the replies on diet/nutrition. If I stick with WW, I think I will try core. We'll see after weigh in tonight!

Ellen, did you go to Purdue to study food and nutrition? My brother went to grad school there (for economics)--nice campus! I ask because I went to UW-Madison for dietetics/nutrition and seriously looked at Purdue's program but it was too much $$ for me.

Oh yes, I know, if I am a dietitian I shouldn't have to ask "diet" questions! I mostly do clinical work though.

Talk to you tomorrow!

-Thea

Hi Everyone! No workout for me today. I am playing a 'clown' at our local church's vocational bible school. I was there all morning, and I have to be there tonight also. It makes me wonder why I say yes sometimes!! Anyway, it should be fun!
I'm going to have to move Bootcamp for tomorrow's workout instead.

And yes, I think there is a law, if you live in Wisconsin, you are a Packer fan, and if you are not, you pretend to be!!!

Hi Thea,
Actually, I majored in English/professional writing at Purdue — I didn't truly discover my interests in nutrition and fitness until after I graduated. I worked at Purdue for three and a half years and started taking some of the classes toward a dietetics/exercise and fitness degree (Purdue has a combined program), but we decided that if we were ever going to move out of Indiana, we had to go through with it, so we did. We moved to Madison last August. I'm FINALLY almost officially a resident, so I'm hoping to go to UW this spring. I'm torn between physical therapy and dietetics...if I had unlimited time and money I'd probably just do both! Most of the prereqs are the same for a master's, although there are a few more for dietetics. I'm taking a couple of classes at MATC this fall.
What kind of clinical work do you do? I'm really interested in finding out what the field is really like. A friend of mine is a consulting dietitian, and she mainly travels to nursing homes and hospitals.
Take care,
ellen

Marie -

Body for Life is a lot different than WW. With WW, it's all about counting points. Sure, they try to steer you in the right direction by awarding a lower point value to foods high in fiber but I found I just wasn't getting enough protein. Yesterday, for example, I consumed 31 points in my 6 Body for Life meals which figuring in activity points means that I used 5 flex points. (31 - 22 + 4AP) Now consuming 5 flex points a day means I'll have NO flex points for the weekend. I like to cheat a little on the weekend. Now, I could always cut back my points and save my flex points for the weekend but I always felt starved doing this (even though I was drinking water, eating 0 point soup, yada yada) so I usually wouldn't make it to the weekend without cheating.

With Body for Life you're "not supposed to" count calories, fat grams, carbs, points, anything (but I still do count calories and protein grams to make sure I'm not too far out of line and that I'm getting enough protein). What you do is eat 1 good lean protein and 1 good carb at each of the 6 meals spaced throughout the day. Basically, it's your 3 meals plus 3 snacks. Since I exercise early in the morning I'll usually eat before and after my workout and then skip the evening snack. You also have vegetables with lunch and dinner and drink 10 glasses of water a day. I don't always do so well on the water;-) What it boils down to is clean eating.

You follow this eating plan for 6 days and on the 7th day you get a free day where you can eat anything you want. The first time I did BFL 5 years ago I went nuts and I do mean NUTS on my free day eating everything in sight. It worked for me though and I was able to get back on track the next day. Because I'm older and have hypothyroidism now (which I didn't before) it's tougher for me to lose the weight so I'm going to do a cheat meal instead.

It's very strict but it works. I'm the type of person who can't eat just 1 cookie. I have to have 5 or 6. It's better for me to say "Cookies aren't an option today" rather than count the points and possibly trigger a binge.

Bill Phillips has a book called "Body for Life" which explains all out the eating plan and the workout plan which I don't follow because I'd rather workout to Cathe. He also has a website and a new book out (which I haven't read but want to get) called "Body for Life for Women".
