Buddy having surgery

MissL

Cathlete
My 4-year-old chocolate lab, Buddy, is having surgery today. He has a torn cruciate ligament, and they are doing what is called a TPLO. It is a two-hour surgery and very invasive. He is a healthy dog and I am taking him to a specialist, but I still am worried just b/c that's what I do best when it comes to my dogs. They are my "children in fur coats." Anyway, I would appreciate it if you would say a prayer for Buddy that all will be well and the surgery will be a success. Thank you so much.

MissL,

No doubt that I'm sending you and Buddy big {{{{{{HUGS}}}}}} and prayers today. I know exactly how you feel they are our "children in fur coats".

Tanner's surgery went well and we may get to pick him up tomorrow:D He has a long road of recovery but I'll just be happy to have him home :)

I remember when I was a kid, our male newfie had surgury for his cruciate ligament, too, and it wasn't the surgery that was so bad... it was the recovery period. I still remember my Mom "draining" it.
Anyway, sending good healing vibes your dog's way! Good luck to him.

I will keep Buddy in my prayers today! Let us know how the surgery goes. My three doggies ARE my children, so I totally understand how you feel!

Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Buddy. My old Aussie had that done when she was seven. The recovery was the hard part because for 3 weeks she wasn't allowed to do anything but walk outside to potty. She was used to running and playing. After that we still had to limit her to walking, but at least it was mor than just a potty trip.

The vet called and said that the surgery went very well and Buddy is doing fine. He is in ICU, where a veterinarian and two technicians are present 24/7, and he will have to stay there overnight. He should be ready to come home tomorrow morning, and I can't wait to go and get him. Buddy and I thank you all so much for your prayers, healing vibes and positive thoughts. It really helps to read through all of the messages when you're sitting around anxiously awaiting a call from the vet.

Now we start a lengthy (3-4 month) recovery. If I understood the vet correctly, when they perform this surgery, they cut a piece out of the top of the tibia and put a metal plate in there with screws to hold everything in place. It changes the angle between the tibia and the femur, and the metal plate holds the femur back so it can't slide forward and cause ligament damage again. This more invasive surgery makes for a longer recovery but apparently is much more effective and greatly reduces the chances for a recurrence. So Buddy and I (and Miss Dolly) will be living in the basement for several weeks b/c he can't do stairs and at this level he won't need to in order to go out. (Thankfully, this is where my workout area is. Plus there is a kitchen and full bath down here.)

Chastity--I'm so glad to hear Tanner's surgery went well, too. Best of luck to you on his recovery. (((((((Hugs))))))) to you and your family b/c I know the recovery period will be difficult for you Take care.

Beavs--A fellow lab lover! Buddy is waiting for his hugs and kisses.

Everyone else who replied, thanks for sharing and thanks again so much for your prayers.
