broken shut-off switch i.e. eating everything in sight....

andreasue

Cathlete
I swear I have a broken shut-off switch when it comes to food. I have to regulate my food intake everyday (in a journal) in order to stay in control of my eating otherwise I'd always overeat. I simply never feel full...even after a huge meal. I can always find room for one more thing - something sweet or salty or spicey...whatever fits the bill.

Tonight I lost control. Split a bottle of wine with my DH (I usually stay away from wine at all costs as it usually costs me dearly in the calorie department) and then I went to work on every high calorie, sweet, salty, snack-type food available. I feel like a circus sideshow because at 5'5" and 120lbs I am by far the smallest member of our family yet I can outeat anyone in my house, hands down (and let me tell you - my husband and teenage sons are large sized males! ) They look at me with a mixture of amazement and disgust when this uncontrolled eating kicks in.

Now I am a bloated, disgusting mess...and still not 100% full folks...nope, I'm never, ever 100% full. What is it with me? I call it a broken shut-off switch...does anyone else have this problem? Can you control it? How?!!!

RE: broken shut-off switch i.e. eating everything in si...

Andrea,

I seem to have had the no shut-off switch problem lately, too, and I know exactly what is the root of it for me. I'm under a lot of professional pressure right now, and when stress hits, I eat!

I would say you are either blessed with a speedy metabolism or possibly you are doing emotional eating, too. Is it boredom? Is it loneliness? Is it stress? It sounds kinda Dr. Phil, but for a week, try adding in your journal your feelings with each meal. You may find that you have been overeating to fill some kind of void.

Some other things to consider: are you getting enough fiber? Protein?

I've heard hot tea or coffee is good before satisfying your cravings because, for obvious reasons, it forces you to slow down, allowing the hunger pangs to pass.

Good luck! I have scheduled myself for a 90-minute massage today, so I have no excuse to stuff the piehole!

ITA with everything Cathy said.

You are not alone. It seems like I am constantly eating! I've started keeping food log this past week and OMG, I eat like 8x a day some days!!!! }(

If you simply can't ignore the call of the food then make sure you have healthy low calorie snacks available. I wanted something last night after dinner so I cut up some fresh veggies ate them with f/f dressing. It actually satisfied me enough to where I didn't need to eat anything else and there was no harm done. :)

HTH!:)

I am just jealous you can pig out and not gain weight.x( If I did that, oh boy.

Sounds like your pig outs might have their roots in an emotional issue, ask yourself how you are feeling before you start your eat fest, and then try something not food related to address it. We all eat out of boredom, sadness, stress, anger or even happiness. Good luck to you!:)

I'm glad you posted this. Lately, yes, I DO have this problem. It's so strange. I never thought I could be so hungry. But it's not just "wanting to eat", it's genuine hunger. My DH weighs twice as much as I do, and I regularly eat him under the table. I weigh myself every week at the gym and the scale never budges except to very slowly inch downwards! I'm so amazed, I often comment about it to my DH and he says "why are you complaining"? But I'm not complaining, I'm just amazed!

I used to be able to eat a bowl of oatmeal at 8 am and not want lunch until 1 pm. Now I can't make it to 1 pm. Same EXACT breakfast, but now I need to eat again at 11:30! I have to force myself to wait until noon. I don't eat much junk food, though, except ice cream. I just keep eating larger and larger salads with more and more ingredients and dressing. The guy who makes my salads at the salad bar just looks at me and looks at the salad and shakes his head, as if to say "where are you putting all of this food??". We see each other so often, we're like best friends now. LOL! At night I'm downing unbelievable amounts of peanut butter and ice cream. My DH takes a few spoonfuls, and I down most of the half gallon.

Last week at the gym I weighed 109. I'm 5'3". (According to my doc, I weighed 117 all through my forties. I'll be 52 in March). If I knew the secret, I'd write a book and make millions, but I can't explain it. It's particularly amazing at my age, when most of the women I know are having the opposite experience.

Oh, no, Deb! Now I'm going to lose all my friends on the Cathe boards! :( ;)

Just so you remember to still like me: my gyn said I haven't even started perioM yet! So all the joys of the M word still lie ahead. :-( Come to think of it, you may even want to feel sorry for me.

It's not the calorie content of the wine you have to be concerned about. I think I read that a glass of Savignon Blanc has 117 calories. But alcohol affects your ability to self-restrain. Hence, your eating binge went out of control.

RE: broken shut-off switch i.e. eating everything in si...

Thanks to everyone who replied..it's good to know I'm not alone.:)

I would, however, gain weight if I did this everyday. Nancy, I'm jealous! What I wouldn't give to be able to down the Peanut Butter without consequenses!

I'm not much of an emotional eater as I tend to need a physical release (exercise) in order to de-stress. I know what tripped the switch last night...it was the wine! Thank goodness I don't drink wine often (although I love it);)

This is more of a curious sort of issue that I've coped with my whole life...this inability to feel full. Like Nancy, I wonder how it's possible for me to eat more than a large man like my husband. It also takes a lot of self-control and vigilance (food journal) to stay on track because I don't feel full in a way that most people seem to (although lots of water before, during and after a meal does seem to help). I don't know if this makes sense, but I do know that I'm staying away from the vino for a good long while!

I had a doctor tell me to take magnesium to help with the cravings for sweets. It does help me.

:) ;-)
