Books are movies for the mind...and movies can take you places you can't get to alone.

I love giving both as gifts and would love to hear which have shaped your life in some manner. Here are a few of my favorites.

The Giving Tree....Shel Silverstein
Oh! The Places You'll Go...Dr. Seuss
Hug Your Customer...Jack Mitchell
The Purple Cow...Seth Godin (reading his blog should be mandatory!! it is awesome.)
The One, Two, Three Mystery series...Janet Evanovich (Stephanie Plum, Joe Morelli, Ranger and Lula are hysterical!!)
The A, B, C Mystery Series...Sue Grafton (Kinsey Millhone rocks)
In The Woods...Tana French (the imagery is second to none)
Harry Potter...JK Rowling (the magical made up words alone are worth it)

Movies
"Harry Potter"...epic
"Five Minutes of Heaven" by Guy Hibbert an honest dipiction of a very complicated place where I used to live...Northern Ireland
"Mamma Mia"...my go to movie to lift the spirits!
"Dead Poets Society"
"Mulholland Drive"
"Ferris Buellers Day Off"
"Raging Bull"
"The Messenger"
"ET"
"Grease"
"Field of Dreams"
"Back to the Future"
"Raiders of the Lost Ark"
"The Little Mermaid"

Sometimes it was the movie...sometimes it was the experience and who I watched it with...great memories!!

Great question
There have been so many books over my life time but in all honesty I know the greatest influence upon my life have been all study books about the Bible. I just love to study the Hebrew & Greek meaning of words. It's like unlocking a great mystery. I have the most gratifying and content result because of it. As for movies, well there are so many.

We were soilders
Pretty Woman
The time travellers wife
The blind side
The Bolen sisters
Dumb & dumber (yes, we all need one like this LOL!)
Gladiator
Forest Gump
The notebook (love this one)
My best friends wedding
Slum dog millionaire
Freedom writers
Extraordinairy measures
The karate kid (newer one)
A christmas carol
The family man
The bucket list
It's complicated (love this one a lot)
Up close & personal
The end of all war
The horse whisperer
Field of dreams
Titanic
OK, I could keep going but a movie has to move me and give me something to either laugh out loud hysterical or think about it after watching it enough to converse about it.

In this order: The Book Thief, Gone with the Wind, The Red Tent, The Kite Runner, Marie Antoinette, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. I wouldn't say they shaped my life, but they certainly moved me. I love book threads. : )

When I was around 10 years old my Aunt recommended i read To Kill a Mockingbird. I loved it! That book is still very special to me as it shifted my reading into more "adult books".

As for movies, I would have to say The Shawshank Redemption is one of my all time faves.

OMG, I LOVE Shawshank Redemption!!!!

Up the Down Staircase by Bel Kaufman. I read it my freshman year of high school for a book report, and it's definitely one of the forces that moved me to become a teacher. I'm surprised how few people have even heard of it, considering it was a movie as well.

Others I love:

All the Harry Potters (I've read the whole series three times )
Water for Elephants
Jane Eyre
Pride and Prejudice (My favorite. Every young woman should read this so they know what "real" romance is! :))
The Kite Runner
The Book Thief
The Secret Life of Bees (Another every young woman should read!)
To Kill a Mockingbird
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
