Bloating

It seems lately after eating my stomach bloats. I eat pretty healthy, but it still happens. I’m not sure if it could be breads (even if it is one slice), or an allergy. I drink plenty of water every day. I never had this happen before. I hardly wear jeans because of it. Does this happen to anyone else? Or know why this occurs?

Yep, I'm a bloater. The doctor told me that I am, apparently, an "air swallower". Meaning, I tend to swallow lots of air when I eat. Well, doesn't everybody? Guess not. I have noticed that since I've cut the carbs of bread and such way down, the bloat is less. But I've always had issues with that, not just recently. HTH, Alexis

Check out "The False Fat Diet" by Elson Haas - it's a real eye opener for anyone who struggles with bloating. Here's an excerpt from the Amazon review:

If you know you swell up after bee stings, you avoid bees. If you know a close encounter with poison ivy will leave you itching and scratching for a week, you keep your eyes open for three-leafed plants. But, according to The False Fat Diet, many of us spend our entire lives eating foods that "don't agree with us," and as a result carry around extra pounds, put up with allergies, and go through life looking older and feeling less energetic than we should. Of course, the hook here is weight loss. If you eliminate the foods that make you gassy and bloated, you can probably drop pounds instantly--up to 10 pounds of "false fat" in a week, Elson Haas says--and then keep dropping weight in subsequent weeks and months, the real fat, all without feeling hungry or deprived.

Thank you so much Akirland! I was hoping you would chime in. I remember reading a while ago a comment you made on a thread about how some people walk around like they are six months pregnant. I am going to get this book. But I was also interested to hear from anyone else who may have the same experience.

I remember when I was fifteen and extremely thin someone mentioned that I was wearing my sexy tight uniform to work that day. (I worked at a steak restaurant.) But I only had ONE uniform, and I hadn't gained an ounce. It was just after-eating bloat, and it was so noticeable that other people could actually see it. I wish I knew what caused it. It's very frustrating, especially in form-fitting clothes. When I put them on, they look great. After a meal, any meal, I look like my clothes are too tight. I'm going to check into that False Fat book, too. Sounds encouraging.

Hi Susan, I know how uncomfortable this problem is. I had the "feel 6 month pregnant" syndrome too. (Sometimes, 2-4X/week) My aunt who lives in another stae had the same problem and her Dr. prescribed a charcoal pill (prescription only) and also told her to take a garlic supplement every day. I decided to give just the garlic a try and I don't know if it was coincidental or what, but it worked miracles for me!!!! I checked with my primary physician and she said it was good for me too! I try to eat oatmeal every day and I truly think this helps as it is good fiber and keeps "things" moving. ;-) Don't know if this will help but I am so grateful for the garlic advice. BTW, I buy the garlic with parsley supplement as it leaves no odor on your breathe or skin. GOOD LUCK!

Oh I forgot about the health food store stuff. I was recommended a supplement called Food Enzymes and it worked like a charm. I don't have the need for it anymore but it was a noticeable improvement. Back to the air-swallowing, I had a pelvic ultrasound a few years back and ya have to drink a gallon of water before you go in. Well, they were amazed at how much air was in my belly! Then the burps started....it wasn't pretty! Alexis
