Birth Control Pills: Generic vs Brand

Are the generic version of birth control pills less effective than the brand name? Even though the pharmacist says they have the exact same ingredients.

I've been on Loestrin Fe 1.5/30 for about 13 years and have never had any problems at all. So my insurance company decides that they are going to charge me $40 (instead of the $8 I've been paying this whole time) because there is a generic available. It is call Microgestin Fe 1.5/30. I got the generic and paid my $8 but am really nervous for some reason about taking them. I've taken them for 3 days now. I'm actually thinking about going back to the pharmacy and seeing if I can get the Loestrin refilled and suck it up and pay the $40.

Any advice?

Hi Kimbra,

I have been using the generic brand of a different birth control pill for well over three year snow and haven't had any problems. My doctor prescribed Mircette for me, but it has a generic equivalent called Kariva.

You could check with your doctor.

I've been taking generic for over two years and have also not had any problems. I did have an adjustment month or two when I had breakthrough bleeding but my gynocologist said that was normal. Other than that they've worked for me. I was also very nervous but my mom's best friend is a pharmacist and promised me they worked just as well.

I've been taking Aviane which (I think) is the generic brand for Ortho Tricyclen. My doctor told me the only difference between the generic and the ortho was the name and price. I've been using it for about 4 years and so far so good. :) It's also nice to only pay $5 (!) a month.

All this means is the namebrand patent has expired and now another company has the same right to sell you the same molecule blob. Save your $40.00 and donate to a food pantry if you must part with it that badly. Just my two cents... ;-)

kimbra, i work in pharmacy and you shouldn't worry, the drug company wouldn't be able to put them out if they weren't the same, but some people do prefer the brand over generic good luck

Think about it....if there was anything wrong with the generic you and one million other women would have a multi-million dollar class action paternity suit against the company;). The generic has exactly the same amount and active ingredients as the brand name drug, but you are not paying for the research and development. Enjoy the savings.

Robin:)
