Has anyone ever gone to a Bikram yoga class?? My sister's friend teaches at a studio & I was invited to take a free class tomorrow. I was wondering how hot does it get?? Is it more than 100 degrees in there?? I have heard people going and getting dehydrated, so it makes me kind of nervous. Any feedback would be great!!

TIA
Aila:)

I don't know much about it, Aila but I wouldn't go! lol I've seen it on tv and it looks BRUTAL! People just literally soaked with sweat and I think it does get hotter than 100...I think. EEEWWW no thank you! lol...but that's just me.

But hey-the class is free so you can just leave early if you are not liking it. If you do go, you gotta check back to let us know what it's like!!!

Have a great work out!

I have friends that do Bikram and they like it. They say they feel refreshed after, like they've expelled toxins through sweating (I don't think that's actually possible). Personally I think it's strange but then again I've never done it. Try it and see, you may love it. Oh, try not to position yourself next to the heater and drink lots of water before hand.

Let us know how it goes if you decide to try it.

I know this is an old thread...BUT..I was doing a search to see what people thought of Bikram Yoga and what their experiences might be:)

I just started this on Friday and absolutely love it! I never thought of myself as a yoga type person and maybe the reason I like it so well is that it doesn't fit my idea of what yoga is. I don't know exactly what I expected, but it whatever I imagined, I was pleasantly surprised.

I will say that anyone who knows me, knows that nothing makes my whine like a bratty little girl more than the heat. Hello! I live in the High Sierras...our winter temps are often below 0 and I am just fine with that. Anyway, going into a room at 105 took my breath away. Thank the Lord I got to lay down!

Once class got started I was already sweating. At one point, in an upside down sort of posture, the sweat on my face actually started to run UP my nose...kind of rough on the breathing through your nose strategy.

Anyway, to avoid any novels here, I will just say that I am hooked. I honestly say you get used to the heat. It allows me to stretch deeper and much further than I thought I could. It is totally relaxing, and I honestly feel like I came out of a massage when I leave that sweatbox, I mean room.

Anyone else have experience with this?

If I do yoga when I'm sweaty my hands and feet slip all over the mat. How do you avoid that problem?

I do a similar type of power yoga at a studio where I live. It's not Bikram, but it is done in an 85-degree room. I leave sopping wet every time and absolutely love it! I started about 4 years ago, took some time off during a pregnancy, and have been back at it for about 6 months now. I cannot imagine NOT going at least twice a week. Like you said, the heat helps me stretch deeper and there's something about working up a good sweat that makes me feel like I just had an excellent workout. Not to mention the benefits of all that breathing!! And, the hour and a half that I spend in yoga is the only time that I can truly say that I am not thinking about anything else at all -- not the kids, the husband, the messy house, etc, etc. It is completely "me" time.
Keep going to those classes and enjoy!!

Beth: Have you tried a Yogitoes towel -- you place it over your sticky mat. I sweat a ton during yoga and was always slipping and sliding on my mat. But once I started using the Yogitoes towel/mat, I stopped slipping altogether.

Oh, I'm definitely sweaty and slip off my own body! I use a beach towel over my mat and therefore don't slip on that. I also learned after the first day not to use any lotion. Go as clean and dry as I can. Even still I have to hold on tight, and you do get better at it. Mostly because you get stonger and your body starts to hold itself...rather than me hanging on to myself for dear life.

The gross thing is that every time I leave there my clothes and the entire beach towel is drenched! I come home and it immediately goes into the wash....blech!
