Biggest loser - thoughts on new twist?

Cathlete
So for those of you who watched the season opener tonight...

How do you feel about this new twist to send home almost half of the people for 30 days? I suppose for the remaining player, it's gotta be extremely motivating to know it's up to you to bring them back. I just hate in any season when people go home the first week, and now it's practically half the contestants, so I'm torn.

So far, I do like the cast much better in this season than last.

I love the new twist! The one contestant is right.....it sends an AWESOME message that the 'normal' person (the MAJORITY) of overweight and obese people do NOT have the chance to workout with Bob or Jillian, or have people teach them how to cook, etc. I LOVE it!

And I, too, love the contestants (so far)!

Gayle

Wasn't that just a totally emotional show? The weights, the tears, watching them try to figure out what to do in the gym by themselves, etc. All you can do is really root for all of them.

Jean

but seriously

its not that we don't know how to eat is it? We all know how to eat properly but we just don't wanna waaaaa!!!!

sorry. I got a little out of hand there for just second.

Just want to echo what Gayle & Jean said. I think it was important to establish right from the beginning that you've got to take control of your health/weight/exercise program right where you live. ...and, I too, found this opening episode to be highly emotional. This country's in an obesity crisis.

Maybe I'm naive, but I actually do think many people don't know the best way to eat - there is a lot of conflicting information and five million diets out there. Most large people have tried all five million, so it's not that they don't want to. A lot of people don't know about eating clean.

I have to admit that I was cracking UP when Bob and Jillian were watching the contestants in the gym thru the camera. OMG! That woman on those parallel bars! I couldn't stop laughing.....I mean, what was she trying to DO? And that poor old guy (not good at names, sorry). I'm so glad he's okay and that they decided HE should stay. I'm already rooting for the young kid to ROCK THIS competition!!!

Let's just hope there's no "Vicki" in the midst!

Gayle

I loved the contestants last night. My heart went out to that youger guy that weighed so much....Good for him and his first weight lost. I can't wait to see there transformations.

What trainer would everybody choose? I would definitely choose Jillian...she has a 'take no crap' attitude and i love her for that!

Amelia-I'd take Jillian without a doubt! I LOVE her no nonsense attitude and takes no excuses. At the same time, she gets to the route of the problem to help make the transformations LAST!

Absolutely Gayle....you hit the nail right on the head. She got to the route of the problem with last season's winner and I think that helped her win along with her incredible determination.

Jillian ROCKS (don't get me wrong...love bob too;))

I completely agree with you. We are having a little "New Years" challenge in my group at work. I'm trying to help them with what they eat without being too pushy. Several think that eating soups/salads are automatically good for them. Of couse the soups are cream based and the salads are laden with dressing. YES it is very hard to eat clean but I truly believe that some people really aren't educated on what is healthy and what is not. Just my two cents...

I love this show....I was having a craving for something sweet last night and while I was watching the show I said to myself this is WHY you don't want that!!!!! Helps keep me in check...:D

ITA. My SIL is very large. She has tried every diet under the sun. She wanted a gastric bypass surgery but didn't have the funds to do it. She gave up for a few years out of frustration. Now, she's trying again. I saw her at Christmas and to see what she considers healthy nutrition is eye openeing to me.
It's difficult to tell someone that processed foods are bad. They think because the package states "low fat, no trans fat, high fiber, low calorie" it is healthy. Sure they are lower calorie foods but they contain ingredients that make you crave more food. How can anyone succeed with that going against them? Willpower, fighting the cravings can only last so long.

In today's society, eating natural food seems to be some form of punishment. If you ditch the crap, and replace it with food made by nature and not by man, you're dieting.

The food industry would go belly up if everyone began to eat food from a farm and not a factory.

I forgot to say...

I thought last night show was great. I've only seen a few episodes of BL and I really didn't like it.
My heart went out to the two young boys. The older couple tugged on my heart too.

I didn't like the twist. There is a huge difference for the contestants that get to stay and the ones that had to go home. Life "At the Ranch" is 24/7 of workouts and healthy eating/counseling/etc. Besides, these people signed up for COUPLES. I just don't think it's fair to the ones that have to go home. And how sad was it to see these people get up on the scale, and lose over 10 lbs in ONE week, and be disappointed over it, because they didn't make the cut! That whole thing truly annoyed me ...

I agree, Jean, I thought it was extremely emotional! How about the guy that had bypass surgery and still was so big? And the size of the 19 year old. Wow... it broke my heart to see these people so obese and ill!

So far, so good on no "vickies". I think if that happens again, I'll stop watching. I got so angry and annoyed last show!

I watched for the first time ever last night, I really enjoyed the show. My favorite part was also when they had to fend for themselves in the gym..."get off the parallel bars'...loved that!!

Gayle, how could you possibly forget the old guys' name...I'll give you a hint, he shares the same name with someone in your avatar, for crying out loud!

I'd prefer Jillian as well to train with!

The food manufacturers in this country have done an excellent job of creating the illusion that their products are healthy. That added to the fact that people's lives become so busy that they are constantly looking to grab whatever food is easiest/fastest really does a number on their ability to choose wisely. Eating natural foods and preparing food from scratch just seems to be viewed by many as too time consuming and/or difficult.

Like Chris said, it is so sad to see people disappointed because they lost 10 pounds. And how is it even possible to loss 30 pounds in a week? I don't care how big you are, that doesn't sound safe or healthy.

That's what really bothered me as well. The first weigh in supposed to be so exciting and happy becuase everyone loses a good chunk and instead it made it sad.

They way I've heard them explain the big loss is that a) it's a lot of water weight and b) most of these people come to the ranch w/ the ability to cut thousands and thousands of calories from their diets alone. When you can cut 2000 calories a day from diet alone and then put couch potatoes on serious exercise too, it makes for big loss. Not sure that it's necessarily healthy for such a drastic change, but probably healthier than any way they've tried to lose weight before.

I LOVE that they have a guy on there that is that big AFTER gastric bypass. Maybe now my husband will stop thinking it the miracle answer to his problems.:(
