Benefits of Oatmeal?

I love oatmeal, but I went a step further, I went to the food store and got "groats" which is the grain of oats, it looks like barley, so I soak it and cooked it in my rice steamer, I added lots of apples and raisins and a little bit of stevia, a sweetner, it got very thick after a while and put it in a container and then the fridge, when I feel like it I have a cup for breakfast or just a spoon when I have the craves for carbs, once I cooked it with pumpkin and added some vainilla and cinamon, tasted like Thanksgiving to me, yum yum, I recommended to try it.

Norma, you must REALLY love that oatmeal, LOL! (This is coming form someone who once posted the same message 5 times because it didn't seem like it had posted!)

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I'll try the muffin idea and maybe attempt the regular old fashioned oats again.

Hi Kimbra,
I mix egg whites with Quaker quick cooking oatmeal, add a little cinnamon and cook like a pancake. I got the recipe from the Body for Life site and it's sooo good. I think it's called a protein pancake -- perfect for a post workout meal.

That actually doesn't sound too bad, Patricia.

I wanted to add one comment to the oatmeal discussion. Add a little vanilla extract (real vanilla extract please). It adds a subtle sweetness. Oatmeal is very good for you but if you absolutely cannot stand the taste/texture then you need to move on to something else. Food should be a good experience, not a bad one.

And it's not a problem with people adding sugar to oatmeal, as long as they aren't adding sugar to their coffee too. And then having a Milky Way bar with lunch...you get the picture. Sugar isn't going to kill us...over-consuming it will. Add sugar to your diet where needed and where it makes sense, such as sweetening up a bowl of oatmeal. But only allow yourself one teaspoon...don't go hog wild.;)

You can also add oatmeal to other foods to get more of it in your diet. When I bake choc. chip cookies I have 4 cups of oatmeal in the recipe. Oatmeal in muffins has already been suggested. Oatmeal in pancakes.

Is regular instant oatmeal bad too? I make the 5 minute one when I have time, but sometimes 5 minutes seems too long when kids have to get to school and bus stops.:) So, I use the regular instant and sprinkle with brown sugar.
