Belly button piercing

Hey girls I did a search for previous posts on this topic. Yesterday was my 35th birthday and I am going to get this done for gift. Couple of questions Some mentioned a sea salt bath how do you go about doing this splashing it on or actually getting a bowl to try and submerge it. Forgive me if this sounds stupid but I do not know anyone that has it done. When I was in my early 20's I worked in a nail salon and a tech started doing piercings there and I remember as if it were yesterday the gun got stuck on this poor young girl and she passed out in the chair. I have been hesitant since but I feel I am ready I have a tatoo on my lower back, I have had 3 children and my ears are pierced.

Next question. Do they still use a gun?

I have read of the types: rings, barbell & studs. Which would be the wisest to go with? Right now would be a good time because of the warmer weather here in Michigan I can wear lighter clothing.

How about the price range I am not allergic or have a sesitivity to any jewelry. What did you wear? Did you workout the same day? Did you bring your own jewelry of choice?

Are there places that may charge you more to have it done I seen a Tattoo/piercing shop in our town that is very reputible but I do not want to pay an arm and a leg If I can get it done at Claires for cheaper Know what I mean?

Thank You for all your answers in advance.

1. Go to a reputable piercer who uses a needle, not a gun. Don't get it done by some kid at Claire's just because it's cheaper. It's not worth it.

2. I got a ring to start with but most places use barbells now.

3. You'll be thanking your lucky stars for low-rise pants;)

4. Use epsom salts. You put it in a cup with some warm water and sort of seal it against your stomach over your belly button and swish it around. Be forewarned - sometimes they take MONTHS to heal.

NO!!! they should needles. i know it sounds scary but getting the belly button pierce isn't quite as bad as other body parts. mine felt like a pinch. and you should go with a small ring about 14-16 gauge. and most pros will use stainless steel. i don't know where you are doing yours but most tattoo/piercing parlors were my choice b/c the strict laws they had to follow and most of them had to take actual anatomy classes before they could even touch a needle. i am not sure of your area's laws but where i got mine done they didn't mess around. its a little more but its worth it when somebody is willing to spend those extra few minutes to go over EVERYTHING with your before, during, and after to make sure everything goes smoothly

as for sea salt my cousin and i took small cups(think something like nyquil cups most drug stores should have them) and mix warm water and salt and just hold the cup tightly(so no leakage) and let it soak for a few minutes. my cousin had his nipples pierced and it was funny to see him lying on the bed holding these cups over his nipples. there now i gave you a funny i image when you are scared LOL.

Hi There,

I did mine about a yr ago but I had had it done before and when I did it this time...boy did it hurt! She said there was an infection trapped in there and thats why it hurt so much!

Most places use a needle now but its not what you think. You will be amazed at how fast it is.
Mine cost $60 but I am in CAD so I don't know what price range youwill be looking at.
I have a barbell and I am assuming thats all you can have when its being periced with a gun. When I changed it, I still kept it as a barbell but just a prettier one:)

The sea salt bath is epsom salts. You just take a little bit,put it into a shot glass, and then hot water. She told me as hot as I could handle. Then you just put it over the pericing but it acts like a suction cup.And you lay on your bed, or whatever and watch a bit of t.v while it is working its magaic.
Mine got really infected a few times so don't be alarmed when that happens. It would get better, then bad again and I thought about taking it out but then I didn't want another infection to get trapped in there again! But it was totally healed within 6 m of having it done and I love it!
Good luck..not sure if I answered all of your questions.

hi there :)

i had mine done last summer and paid $40. I also had natural childbirth and and i have 2 tattoos. this was worse, lol. it just hurt alot AFTER, so it wasn't the same as a tattoo where it hurst for a bit and then it's done. mine hurt me for a good 2 months afterwards. but that is normal from what i hear, and it can hurt even longer than that. now it's fine and it never bothers me at all :)

i would go with a barbell, just b/c it's easier to switch out yourself. the rings can be hard to take off. and definitely get it done with a needle!

i used H2Ocean on mine. you just spray it on and that's that. once i got that it sped up the healing immensly. in the beginning the piercer told me to use antiseptic soap and bactine, and that was taking forever. the h2ocean made all the difference.

good luck, i love mine now!

i got mine done when i was 35 also. they used a needle and he said i had tought skin and he had to really push it through. it hurt when he did it, but then it was over. i think the adrenaline helps. all i did to keep mine clean was use plain old dial antibacterial soap twice a day, and then just left it alone (this is what their instructions said). i had no infections during the healing process by doing that. it is important not to fiddle with it during the day when your hands might have germs on them. that is the only thing that caused me some pain. and whatever you do, don't take it out if it gets really infected as the skin will close the infection inside. it took a very long time to heal to the point that getting it caught on things didn't bother it. they did mine with a ring, and that kept it from getting caught on anything. low rise pants are definitely a new belly button piercing's best friend.

I did mine a year ago and I love mine, here is one advice I got, use sea salt not the iodized sea salt, I used that and helped so much and made healing much faster. Mine hurt for a bit but the sea salt helped a bunch, also as someone said you will be thankful for the low rise jeans LOL. I also used prescription stuff stronger than neosporin. And use dial soap not the kind with the scents it has to be unscented. also if you have a hard time with other metals in like ear piercings take not that you will have the same reaction in the belly button, I can only wear gold barbells, I tried silver and my belly button hurt so bad,

Thanks for sharing your experiences! I was thinking of getting belly piercing next week, but thought 36 was too old! So wrong!

My question is when y'all say that it hurts alot after, what does that mean? tender and sore? like a bruise? Is it painful only if it get infected?

Also, what about workouts, did anybody have to change their routine during the healing process? if so, for how long?

I have good pain tolerance (2 kids), but haven't been pierced since I was 6 months old!

It's tender. It doesn't really HURT. You just know it's there, especially if something rubs against it.

I didn't change my workouts. Just made sure I wore low rise shorts.

I got mine at 36. I was in Vegas with some gf's for a weekend and one of them just said we have to get it done before we leave, so at 4pm on Sunday we did it. :) He used a needle and barbell and was very quick and easy really. It did take forever to heal and got infected a time or two. And major dittos on the Low Rise!!!

I was told and used straight NON-iodized sea salt.

My boys thought it was cool and make me show their friends at times.. :)

I got mine done last August. You can do a sea salt water bath, by putting the solution in a shot glass, press it to your belly over the button and recline for a few minutes. I still have reddness around mine as some clothing irritates it, I would say go with a barbell first on a horse shoe, as a ring doesn't adapt to you clothing as well. When they did mine they did not use a gun, she just clamped it and pushed a needle through with the jewelry attached to it. It was $20.00, although I hear in bigger cities it can be guite a bit more. That included the jewelry, which was just a plain barbell.

Why would any of you think that 35-36 is too old, I got mine done for my B'day last summer. Two of us were over 50. Remember age is just a number and if you want to do something, Just Do It !

Mine was not pain, it was more tenderness, and I iced it pretty good before hubby pushed the needle through, I think the size of the needle scared me the most, after that I didn't feel a thing, just tender. The hardest thing after was laying on the stability ball after, took some healing time before I could do that, but just remember everyone tolerates things differantly and heals differantly, you really should gauge it by how your body tolerates things.

Thank You so much for all your advice and help. I am going to check it out this weekend I will let you know If I chicken out.

i'm happy that you got alot more people who don't think it was too painful - i must be in the minority! i hope you are able to get it done and it doesn't bother you at all! :)

I had my belly button pierced almost 2 months ago. The tattoo parlor I went to did it for $50 and they used a needle. It was over very quickly and felt like a pinch. The only care instructions I received was to wash the piercing twice a day with soap and make sure you rinse all of the soap residue off afterwards. I have not had any infections or problems and it is almost completely healed and I have not had any pain at all throughout these months. I only had a little uncomfortableness when some of my pants would rub against the piercing. Also the guy who did the piercing recommended a barbell for quicker healing. I must say I really am enjoying my piercing alot. I'm sure you will enjoy yours too.

BTW, I agree with the others to spend the extra money to get someone who is good and has experience. It is only a one time expense.

I asked for a ring, but the piercing guy recommended I start with a barbell, because the skin heals best with a barbell. He recommended switching to a ring no sooner than six months after the piercing. If you find a professional piercer, these people can be very knowledgeable and helpful. I spent $80, but I got a slightly nicer piercing because I figured I'd have to look at in every day for 6 months until it healed.
