Beginner Suggestions

Hi I am a 39 year old female looking to get healthier and fit.

I worked out last year doing Turbo jam and Slim in 6. I started but never really finished due to boredom and frustrated I would tire to easily. Maybe I'm trying to go from beginner to advance over night.

I've heard some good reviews with Cathe's dvd's but because I'm a true workout beginner I don't know where to start or what home workouts I should do. I want to incorporate cardio, weight training, ab workouts as well at least doing 1 hit a week. Anyone have any suggestions where I should start my fitness journey.

I just started doing some step aerobics. I bought Keri Anderson's - Go and have done it 2x and Love, love love it! I just got Keri's Curl dvd and have yet to try it out.

Thanks for any suggestions you may have for me :-D

Hi Rose,

Welcome to the forum. If you scroll down the page, there is a rotations forum with a permanent link to a beginner's rotation. Although, that said, maybe you need to work up to it. Cathe's beginner's workouts seemed more advanced than other trainer's advanced workouts. There is no hurry or rush to get there, Cathe will be there when you are ready to kick it up a notch.

Her easiest DVDs are simple to find. When you click on 'shop Cathe' you can select workouts based on their intensity level, beginners, intermediate or advanced. There aren't many 'intermediate' workouts at all.

How many days/week do you want to workout? do you do other types of cross training, such as cycling, walking, running, elliptical? You can do a HIIT type workout with a Cathe disc or with any other type of cardio. I do believe HIIT is one of the more advanced workouts available from Cathe and not appropriate for a beginner. Frankly, I think TJ (Turbo Jam) is easier than any Cathe workout.

One of my first Cathe DVDs was Bootcamp/Muscle Endurance, and it remains one of my favorites. It has the best of both worlds... cardio and weights. I highly recommend it! Another one of my favorites that contains cardio and weights is Kick, Punch & Crunch/Legs & Glutes. You might also really like the 4 day split set. It would be a good place to start because it has a bootcamp, a kickbox and step workouts AND weight workouts all in one set.

You are going to LOVE Cathe!!! :)

I LOVE Cathe, and I'm at a point now where I'm successfully able to do her workouts, but I wasn't always able to.

Another great beginner instructor is Tami Lee Webb (Buns of Steel, Abs of Steel instructor). Her workouts are fairly quick and they're a great starting point. She is the person who actually recommended Cathe to me. Her DVD "I want that Body" is definitely challenging to a beginner, yet quick enough that you won't get frustrated.

Good luck, and stick with it! You'll get there!

Hi, Rose!

At the Collage Video website ( www.collagevideo.com ), you can do searches with various criteria (like level and type of workout) and watch clips of workouts and read user reviews so you get an idea of what they are like.

www.totalfitnessdvds.com also has good clips of workouts.

I agree that it might be best to start with a different instructor (though Cathe does have a beginner workout, she specializes in advanced workouts). Kathy Smith, the Firm, 10-Minute Solution workouts are often beginner friendly but not 'too easy'.

I'd try Cathe. You'd be surprised how easy it is to modify all of her workouts. You can go low impact. You can lighten your weights. You can do a timesaver premix and work up to the entire workout. She also has different levels of workouts. But I'd not limit myself to a beginner or intermediate workout. I'd just modify any of the ones that looked interesting to me... if I were you! Good luck! :)
