i was wondering for those of you who do protein with carbs at every little meal....do beans count as both?

i have been doing the 6 small meals a day with alot more protein and i am starting to get more definition and i lost another 2 LBS this past week (though oddly, i hardly did any cardio:eek: )

can i do beans as a meal?

Hi Jes,

I'm no expert here but IMHO beans count as both protein and carbs since they are a source of both. I frequently eat beans as a meal. Sometimes I just empty a can of pinto beans or cannellini beans into a bowl (I rinse off the bean goo first, of course) and eat them cold. Another good bean recipe is to spread a little dijon mustard onto wheat toast and pile on warmed up black beans. Tons of fiber plus protein and good carbs.

Would you mind posting a little sampling of the foods you're eating? I'm looking for some ideas of things I can eat at work throughout the day.

As a Vegan I think of beans as protein myself but they are also carbs...:)...I tried this with Pintos as they are my fav. Yes rise off the goo!! I added chopped red onion, salsa and Vegan sour cream and heated in the micro a bit...very tasty indeed!!!...:)...Carole

Beans are usually grouped more with protein then with carbs, especially if you look at the food pyramid as they have higher protein content. Also depends on the exact bean. But you could count them as a carb as well, since it's there, just keep in mind some beans are lower in carbs then others, so you may have to add a little bit of something to reach your carb limit, if you have one. But usually a lot of foods has a little bit of something else, but it's always group with whatever is it's majority. But you can still get all your carbs without eating a carb majority food or a food grouped in the carb section. Okay not sure that is all that clear, but not sure how else too put it. For example, a lot think of veggies as protein, but they are also a good source of carbs, well some of them. But the carbs you get from them still count toward your daily allowance, if your going strictly on x amount of protein, x amount of carbs, x amount of fat per day. I don’t know what type of diet or if you’re doing it this way, but it’s one thing I’ve seen with those who really want to build nice strong muscle.

As a good hispanic I love beans since little, and one way to eat them is combined with rice, so this is my recipie for you, fat free refried Pinto beans, I buy them in the can products, then I always have handy brown rice that I cooked and stored in the fridge, I combine beans and rice and OLE! specially as a meal, I also spread in a pita bread that I cut in half, 2 pockets, add salsa and lots of lettuce, fat free sour cream, yum yum, looks like a lot of food but it is not, there is your protein and good complex carbs. bon apetite.

I can't just eat a can of beans, I have to spice them up a bit more than that! And I am mostly vegan too, so I eat a lot of beans.

I like to saute some veggies in olive oil(depending on what's in season), but always garlic and onions, and then say, summer squash or asparagus or carrot. Whatever.

I then add a can of beans, smush it all up with some chili powder, add a little salt and either eat it as is, or roll it into a tortilla, with some salsa, lettuce, sprouts, etc.

I do this meal pretty often.

I love beans and rice, with some hot spices thrown into the rice. My BF cooks this as a meal sometimes, and we both think, oh, this is going to be boring--but we love it every time we make it. Never fails.

I love beans. All types. They are so good, filling, nutritious. Just the other day my friend at work said "you're always eating some type of bean." I just smiled.

I can eat them by themselves with some salsa or tabasco sauce. I am after all Latina.

I always count beans in my carbs. I love them. They add some texture to different reipes. They are some of both so you have to count carbs and protein.
They also make you feel full.
