Baron Baptiste power yoga - comments please

Hi!

Are you familiar with Baron Baptiste's power yoga? If so, could you please tell me:

a. how is he as an instructor? Does he keep things pretty balanced, or emphasize one side and forget the other? Does he use standard terminology, or make up his own names for stuff? Is he chatty or calming? Anything else about him that you can think of?

b. how is the intensity of his power yogas? I see he has a level 1, and a level 2. How do they compare to, say, P90X's Yoga X (if you're familiar with that)? Do you walk away from his workouts feeling like a sweaty bowl of noodles?

c. if you had to take only one yoga dvd to the desert island with you, would you take any of his?

Thanks!
Sandra

Hi Sandra...I like Baron. I have a few of his workouts including his Power Yoga. He is a good instructor, he keeps thing balanced. He actually has a calm voice and IMO not overly chatty.

The power yoga workouts I have are similar to P90X but not at all as long or like the beginning of P90X, not nearly as repetitive.

I would either take Baron or a Bryan Kest yoga workout to a desert island...Bryan would be nice in person...:) :+

a. good instruction, not irritating to listen to

b. I am never sweaty after any yoga, class or dvd

c. yes

I have 2 of his dvds..Unlocking Athletic Power (25 min.) filmed from a live class and Power Yoga Level 2 the Next Challenge (70 min.) the first I bought at Half Price Books and I think it had been part of a set.

I also have done Rodney Yee, Denise Austin, Karen Voight, but I prefer Baron Baptiste. Actually my first preference is a class.:)

Hi Sandra! Great questions!

a. I think Baron's routines are well-sequenced and well-balanced. IMO, though, he's often too chatty and comes up with inane sayings that sometimes even rhyme(!). While this annoys me, it doesn't keep me from doing a routine if it's otherwise good.

b. I have "Power & Precision Yoga" (60 min intermediate VHS - I only do the last section as a post-workout stretch), "Soul of Strength" DVD (60 min more advanced than P&P) and "Putting Postures to Your Prayers" CD (90 min more advanced than SOS and quite challenging). I would say the CD is comparable to Yoga X and my favorite of the three.

c. My desert island yoga DVD would either be PY4H or Yoga X, not any of Baron's.

Sandra,

a. I don't like him as an instructor. He has inane comments and sayings that for me, distract me. Also for me his voice is annoying.

b. I had some of his yoga tapes and gave them away. I had done Bryan Kest's series power yoga first and found those MUCH more challenging! I don't think I ever broke a sweat with Baron.

c. My desert island yoga video would be David Swensons first ashtanga yoga video. After him I would choose Bryan Kest volume 3 sweat.

What I like about David Swensons yoga is its "hot" yoga. You do a vinyasa after every pose to keep your body heat up. My endurance and definition was great when I worked out to him 3 days a week. As testiment to him, I switched from his yoga almost exclusively to Cathe, and never missed a beat! He is the next step up from Bryan Kest!!
