Bargain hunting for camera accessories

After using a throw-away camera on the Roadtrip, I got the bug to take more pics and buy a "real" camera. I got a Nikon Coolpix 4600 on e-bay, and now I want to get accessories. Any suggestions on what to get and where to get them cheap? There MUST be a lot of camera buffs out there who are adept at finding bargains on the web. I live with a photographer, but he's not real web-savy. He buys stuff on e-bay, but that's about it. Thanks in advance for the hints.

Hi,

I have a digital and usually get my accessories at Best Buy. Either online or at the store. A lot of times they have online discounts as well as coupons that are sent in the mail. Once you get on their mailing list, the coupons are constant. Sometimes Walmart or Amazon has what I need too.

DH is a serious camera person. He uses a Nikon D70 for land pictures and a Nikonis for underwater. His preference is KEH camera on line.

Probably one of the first "accessories" you will want to buy is a bigger memory card! Usually, the memory card that comes with a new camera is just not big enough (well, not big enough for ME, at least ;) ). I have gotten good deals on memory from Sam's Club, Best Buy, Circuit City, and various online sources. The prices fluctuate wildly, so it really is a matter of shopping around for the best price - one day Sam's may have the best price, and the next day Computers4Sure.com may have the best price. Also, always look out for mail-in rebates - you can get memory almost FREE if you find a good sale along with a mail-in rebate.

How much memory do you need? Well, you'll probably want a memory card big enough to hold 100 or more photos at the highest resolution setting on your camera. Your user's manual will tell you how much space a single picture takes up on the memory card, and you can go from there. 100 pics may sound like a lot, but say you're going on a tropical vacation for a week, and you aren't going to have a computer around to download pics from your camera - that memory card will fill up surprisingly fast. When I went to Puerto Rico for 5 days, I took a couple hundred pics! So buy the biggest memory card you can afford.

Other accessories you might like - a carrying case of some sort, to protect your camera. Perhaps a tripod (I find that I don't use mine very much though). An extra battery is a MUST. (And keep that extra battery fully charged, and in your carrying case.) Maybe some lens cleaner and lens wipes.

Those are really the main things. Lots of good online sources for that kind of stuff, but before you buy from any online store, check their rating with Bizrate.com. :)
