Rosemarie-I'd buy 2-25#s, a bunch of 10s, a few 5s, and smaller ones if available. I own 2-2.5s and 2-1.25 plates and it makes it so much easier to increase in small 'doses' with those little plates.
DEFINITELY go for 25s, though. When you're squatting heavy, starting off with 50 on your BB in the form of 2-25s is a LOT better than stacking on 10s and 5s.
As for the barbell itself, I have a shorter standard barbell (probably about 5.5 feet long). This shorter version is much nicer than the Olympic barbell I also own....much less likely to swipe something or someone with it as I turn! LOL
