Barbell question

I went shopping today to get a barbell and weights, but am looking for some reassurance.

I am looking at a set that has a straight bar (not curved) and can have either smooth ends or screw on type ends and is about 5 foot long. I am 5' 4". I think the total max wt is 110 lbs. It cost 75 dollars.

Smooth ends with a clip to hold the wts on are what I want, right?

I came home with a new pair of rollerblades instead of a barbell set and weights, so not a total loss. I have opportunity to get to a nice park with miles of smooth level sidewalk and this weather is just too nice, though I did notice 3 gators sunning on the bank across the lake....

Jody...Personally, I think the clip on ones are the easiest to work with. I have the screw on ones too and they can take some time. I would sure be rollerblading fast if I saw those gators...:7 :+ ...Carole

Anne...this is the first time I have looked at your pics!! You look great!!! Your daughter Nicole made a beautiful bride and yes, I am jealous of your nice workout room...:)...Carole

Definitely smooth with the clips. The screw-on time make you, well, screwy. :) Seriously, it's very aggravating when you are trying to change the plates quickly.

You might also try to find one of those pads which sits on the bar and provides some cushion on your back.

I am getting a new barbell soon as the set I have is really old and the plates are rusty-looking and it annoys me. :p What kind were you looking at? I know a lot of women here recommend the Troy Lite...

Anne,
How long is your barbell?

Carole,
I thought the screw on one would be take a little longer.
and hopefully I won't have to outskate anything. :)

>I have the old firm barbell. It is padded. I think Danskin
>makes one also. I love it and it is shorter for women. Not big and bulky like the man ones.

Hi Marie
I don't remember the brand, but it wasn't Troy Lite. That was what I was hoping to find. I thought it looked nice, too. But if I can find something very serviceable/similar at either Play It Again Sports or Sports Authority, I will go with that. It seems like paying for shipping would be cost prohibitive for me.

I LOVE the Troy Lite barbell set. It is smooth, with clips.

I used to have a screw-on barbell, but it takes too long to change and is a PITA.

The clips also help strengthen your grip!

I think it is like 4.5 ft.
It is smaller like for women. I think the men ones are like almost 6 ft long.
Too bulky for me . I may take out something in the room. I use the body bar i have for stability like in calf raises.
I believe the Danskin version is about the same and comes with some 4 lb plastic coated plates. I bougght 2 additional 10 lb. plates and i have some old 2.5's

I got my barbell (clip ons) (Just says Sports Authority) with 100 #'s of weight at Sports Authority for 49.99. It is black. This was the first time having any experience purchasing barbell and mine works great. I looked for purchasing a pad for mine when I set it on my back but the one at Dunhams looks way too bulky so I will keep searching.

I would love to be rolling blading in warm weather.

Thanks for all the info. I ended up at Sports Authority today and got the same barbell, smooth with clips and 100 pds of wt. The length of the barbell was 5 foot and was a little more slender and shorter than some of the other ones they had for sale. I found a pad there, for 1 inch bars and purchased that, too.

I came home and did Power Hour! I used Cathe's wt as a guide, shooting for about half of what she used. That worked out fine for lower bod, but was a little too light for some of my upper parts, so I will be tweaking that. I look forward to doing all those push ups with such great form someday.

Thanks for all the input. I am loving the reliably good quality of the Cathe workouts I have tried so far. These forums are really helpful, too.

I will try out the skates on Tues, I hope it goes well. I am not an awesome skater, but I enjoy. Pads and helmet help me to feel confident.
