Barbell question?

Hello everyone!
I read here a lot, but don't post very much. My DH came through with a nice barbell set for me for Christmas :) However, it's a six foot long barbell and weighs 15Lb. Is this the kind that you guys use? It looks to me from some of Cathe's videos that the bar I received is a little bigger than what I see in the videos? Am I crazy?

Thanks!

Jane

Jane, what a wonderful Christmas present. Everyone is different so we all lift different weights. The length is really no big deal but try it out with no plates & see if you can work with that easily. Maybe that would be a good weight for like biceps and/or chest. Add another 10lbs or so for squats/deadlifts & try that out. I usually follow Cathe's weights closely but that's just me. I guess the best thing to do is try your weights & mark down what works for you in each particular exercise.

Have fun!
Marla:)

Yours sounds like a standard barbell (do the weight plates have a 2" opening or a 1" opening? If 2", then this is a standard weight room bar and weights). Many of us here, including myself, have the Troy Light barbell system, which Cathe uses in some of her workouts (PH?). It is shorter and lighter, and the weight plates are rubber coated. I LOVE my Troy Light.

The only problem you might have with your bar is if you are very small, and the bar seems awkward with moves like barbell biceps curls. Or if you need less than 15# of weight (which you might if you do PH).

Mine is 1" but was VERY long and I will never add THAT much weight to it so I had about 12" welded off each end and now it is just perfect and now it weighs 12 pounds.

Good luck, Wendy

But if you're talking about PH & you can't get through it then definitely just modify by taking a small break & resume as quickly as possible. In no time I guarantee you will complete the set. I used to have to do this on the low-ends when I moved from The Firm to Cathe's Leaner Legs. Trust me! I got to her level but with work.

Jane, I have one that length and 15 lbs. Though yes it's longer...it works just as well! I would like to get a Troy Lite System but something else always comes up that I need to buy instead!! In the meantime this bar has worked fine.

I meant to say that my barbell is 1" diameter but is very long so I had 12" welded off so now it's about 5 feet long which is just perfect.

Sorry if what I wrote earlier was confusing.

I too would like a Troy lite barbell but I'll wait until I have all the other workout stuff on my wish list:)

Hi Jane! I can't say enough about how great the Troy Lite barbell is. I also have a 6' barbell and find it quite cumbersome. You have to watch walls and equipment closeby. How nice of your hubby to get you one though. Would he be offended if you decided to change? Either one will work. It is just a matter of preference. Have FUN with your workouts.

Thank you all for your input!! I tried to do some squats with the long barbell with 10 # on it. It was just kind of cumbersome. I was worried about my furniture and walls :) ! So I told DH that I would try to find a shorter barbell on my own sometime. How expensive is the Troy Lite barbell? Where can I find one?

Thanks!

Jane
