Balance problems

In the past six years, I have had really bad sprains on my left ankle twice (swelling up like a baseball!). The second time, I went to a sports medicine doctor who had me wear a "boot" and I had three weeks of physical therapy.

That was about 3 1/2 years ago. I have always felt that ankle was still a little weak, but it didn't keep me from working out.

In the past 6 months or so, I have been having increasing problems with balance - both when I'm working out and just in general (like when I'm walking, although I've never been terribly coordinated!).

When I try to do some of the exercises I used to not have a problem with - like one legged squats and lifting one leg - or some of the balancing exercises - like on Petra Kolber's Streamlined Strength - I have to grab a wall to keep from falling over.

I'm also having problems with pain in my right hip - I'm guessing it's from shifting my weight from my left side without realizing I'm doing it.

I bought a wobble board and have tried it a couple of times but can't do it without holding onto something. The board came with pictures of exercises, but no information on how long to do each one, how often, etc.

So now I'm getting worried about my balance and want to do something about it.

My question is - has anyone had a problem like this, and if so, who do you recommend I see about it - a physical therapist, pilates or yoga instructor, personal trainer, doctor???????????

I try to work on it on my own with my exercise videos, but I think I need some help to get results.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated!

I would see a regular doctor first, to make sure that you don't have any inner ear issues going on that you're not aware of.

How's your core these days? Do you continue to work on it?

Are you distracted when you're trying to balance? Like maybe focusing too hard on the fact that you'll lose it?

In other words, it could be any number of things that are affecting it. Maybe just try to pay close attention next time to what is going on. If you're really focusing on balance and still having trouble, there may be something else of a physical nature to look at.

Carolyn Jane -

I might not be the right one to answer, but if I were having these issues I would first go to my doctor's to make sure there is nothing physically wrong with me that is not related to your ankle or hip. Get that clear, then see where the doctor suggests you go from there. Balance issues can be caused by so much that I would definitely start there.

Thanks so much for the advice! I have been working on my core - lots of planks, abs, etc., but I think it makes sense to have a doctor check me out before doing anything else. Maybe I will got back to the sports medicine doctor I saw a few years ago since he will have my records.
