Try this delicious recipe! (you can omit the bacon)
HOME BAKED BEANS (from Amish Kitchen)
1 lb great northern navy beans
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 small onion, minced
2 tbsp molasses
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup ketchup
1/2 lb bacon (for non veggies!)
1) Rinse and sort beans. Cover with three inches of water and soak overnight. In the morning add salt and baking soda and bring beans to a boil. Cook for 1/2 hour or until tender. Add more water if beans become dry [note: I just do the quick soak method mentioned on the back of the bean package, and start the process from the "bring beans to a boil" part].
2) Pour into 2 quart casserole and add remaining ingredients. If using bacon it should be fried crisp and crumbled before adding Add drippings for additional flavor if desired.
3) Bake at 325 for 1 1/2 - 2 hours keeping covered with liquid.
