Bad Back

I had back surgery 2 years ago for a ruptured disc. I have had physical therapy and have been told that I need to do core exercises to help protect my back. I have also gained weight during this time and I want to lose it. I have taken up weight training, but know I need to be careful. Could you please recommend any of your DVD's that I could start with that would help me tone and strengthen my body as well as my core.

I have been watching you on FITV and I really like your teaching style. I am very impressed with the controlled manner with you teach and I am looking forward to your suggestions.

Thank you.

Hi daglaser,

Congratulations for wanting to start exercising, especially considering that you've had back surgery.

Cathe is a great teacher, especially on form, which will help you prevent injury. I think the Pure Strength Series is a great DVD to begin with. Although Cathe & the crew use some heavy weights for certain exercises, you can go much lighter and see what you feel comfortable using.

Hi, I am not Cathe, but I had herniated disc surgery too a few years back. I slowly started out with basic ab crunches and bicycles at home on my own, then I moved up to adding a little weight to my ankles and then I started doing Cathe's older Step videos with abs at the end. I lost the weight I gained being unable to move for months and strengthened my abs and core in the process. Some of the core exercises I have had to modify until recently, but now I can do them all. I hope this helps and happy recovery. Isnt it great to be pain free!?

I think the Pure Strength suggestion or Power Hour/MIS DVD would be a good place to start. I had two discs replaced in my neck two years ago (and a titanium plate) and have been doing Cathe for over a year with no problems except a few moves. And Cathe shows modifications for those. The thing about Cathe is: she's ALWAYS concerned about safety and I feel comfortable doing any of her workouts. Alexis

Gina,

Thank you for your input. It is greatly appreciated. I was interested in the Pure Strength Series, and I think I will try them.
