Bacon Question for the Veggies and Vegans

I'm looking for alternatives to bacon (sniff! I love bacon.) I'm wondering what products are good for actually serving in a sandwich, for example, and also any products or subs for when bacon is called for in recipes.

Thanks!

Hi Sparrow,

Well, I love Fakin Bacon Smokey Tempeh Strips by Lighlife. I've found them at lots of health food stores. They're great in a sandwich and I think they would make a perfect sub in recipes. Morningstar makes a veggie bacon which is sort of good and sort of gross. It looks like it came out of the Play-dough fun factory and seems to be frankenfood, like a lot of Morningstar products. Also it's not vegan. But when I used to eat it I thought it strangely captured the taste, smell, and texture of bacon. You may want to try it.

There are lots of vegan bacon recipes on vegweb.com. This one looks yummy, easy, and popular:

I've tried this (or another tempeh bacon) and thought it was good. Not particularly bacon flavored, though, and a bit on the thick side. That may work better for some recipes. I agree it's good for sandwiches and such.

I used to eat this also. You can get a very crisp 'bacon' out of this if you cook it at the high end of the heating time (I always microwaved on one of those microwave bacon cooking trays). It definitely is more processed than the tempeh strips.

Then there are the 'bacos' type vegan bacon bits, like these: http://store.nexternal.com/shared/S...2=501350045&Keyword=bacon&Target=products.asp

that you can sprikle on potatoes or over salads instead of crumbling up cooked 'bacon.' I think they taste more salty than bacony.

Another thought: smoked dulse (a sea veggie) has a somewhat bacony aura about it, especially if lightly toasted. I use it in salads, eat it out of the bag, and have used it in sandwiches (DLTs instead ob BLTs!). It's yummy!: http://seaveg.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=12&products_id=6

We use Morningstar Farms. Tasty! But, it's been so long since I've had real cured pig, that I can't compare the two!

It's great for sandwiches, salads, casseroles, etc., but it won't do what bacon is supposed to do in some recipes, which is render fat.

Just remembered that DH loves Lightlife Smart Bacon. It's available at our regular grocery store. It's pretty tasty, but I don't love it like he does (I'm not crazy about the texture and it's a little salty for me). I like to have it on weekends when I make vegan French toast. :9
