Back starting to hurt

I have never had back problems before, but these last couple days my lower back is really stiff and slightly achey. It doesn't bother me too much when I stand or walk, mainly when I bend and sit. It also felt fine yesterday when I did IMAX. I'm wondering if the side plank dips are the culprit, or that I lifted too much when I did deadlifts? Anyways do you think I should lay of aerobics today, even though it doesn't bother me when I do step aerobics and today is upperbody work, but should I avoid that? I hope this is a temporary thing. Any feedback?

I have had this happen before. I have found that the side planks are ok done with rest days otherwise as I use a 10 lb medicine ball it will cause lower back pain. Also high repetition dead lifts can do this to me, especially if I try and use heavier weights. I can do deadlifts at a slow pace and low reps and not have this happen even with really high weights.

Hi, My back hurts too when I do deadlifts. I get stiff and sore, especially when I increase the weight. The muscle pain also seems to go away slower than other muscle aches and pains. The deadlifts although tough, really have helped strenghten my back over the last year, so dont give up. I had back surgery 2 years ago and I never thought I would be able to deadlifts or any other back exercises again, but backs bounch back I guess. Do only what you feel compfortable and enjoy doing. DOnt exercise if you hurt too much, but only you can answer that question.

Don't want to scare anyone but my herniated disc was caused by bending over the wrong way and while I'm not blaming deadlifts, I was advised to avoid them until my back healed and I developed strong core muscles. It took an entire year before I was able to wake up without back pain in the morning. Stiff back muscles can be a sign of a weak back so I'd advise you to do lots of core strengthening--which Cathe has in many of her vids--to build up your back strength. I do lots of planks. I also do yoga on my days off which helps the core and flexibilty. Just be careful and make sure you're doing deadlifts with perfect form. As Cathe says "we don't want any injuries here!"

Thanks for the feedback. I decided to skip my workout today. I'm afraid I will aggravate it more. I have been doing tons of core work lately, but I think I may have overdone it. Tomorrow I am unable to workout, but I plan to hit it on Friday. I really hate missing my workouts. It puts me in a funk. Oh well, it's turning into a beautiful day so I will sit outside and read my book until the kids get home from school.

Hi all... just a word of caution, as someone else posted, I too had a herniated disk from doing deadlifts the wrong way. I actually know when it happened. I was so into working out that I would not take a break... I ended up having 10 months of excruciating pain and back surgery. Needless to say, if I had to do it over again, I would have taken off a week or more just to see if it would have helped. Instead I ended up taking way more time off and losing all the positive gains I had made. Live and learn.

Are side planks that move in ME? My lower back is hurting more than usual lately and I was doing ME for a few weeks, so I was wondering. It's a good idea to avoid deadlifts while your back is hurting. I also have trouble with the tabletop position for back work when my lower back is hurting.

It could be something simple. My friend started exercising and was not stretching good enough after the exercises. She kept complaining of her back hurting. It turned out her hamstrings weren't getting a good enough stretch and it was hurting her back. Once she started stretching better the pain went away.
