Back in the groove, need your help.

Hi all:

I've been lingering here on Cathe's website for quite a while. But, I need your help.......I USED to be a very BIG exerciser, but unfortunately the busier my life got the less time I made for exercise (my own fault). So now, here I sit with an extra 20 pounds on my body and feeling quite sluggish. I play slow pitch softball during the summer and last night at our practice I thought I would pass out on my way to first base. I used to do everything jog, aerobics, walk, step aerobics, etc. I have the following Cathe tapes, too: Step Works, All Step (CTX), Cardio Kicks (CTX), Cardio Kicks, Mega Step Blast, MIS, MIC, Step Fit...I think that's all.

If anybody can help me get some kind of a routine figured out and some motivation going that would be a tremendous help.

Thanks a bunch in advance. :) Marcia :)

My suggestion is to figure out what time of the day is best for you to work out and start WALKING. That is a good starting point and gradually work back into jogging, if you want. Then you can work back into your Cathe tapes on a low step, or do the Hi/Lo portion ONLY of MIC. You can work back into weights by doing upper body one day and lower body another day, or cut it down further by, instead of three exercises per body part, do only two, or one.

For example, you could do pushups, & bench press for chest; barbell row and one arm row for back; overhead barbell press and lateral raises for shoulder; hammer curls and alternating curls for biceps; and kickbacks and dips for triceps.

Work your way back gradually, and you won't set yourself up for burnout.

As for your diet, go to the library or to a bookstore you get yourself a copy of Dr. Shapiro's Picture Perfect Weight Loss, or consider Weight Watchers.

I play softball too! What position do you play? I play right- or right-center field. I am a decent player, but some girls are simply better and get left and center! So far we are 1-1.

I practice swinging the bat, dropping it and sprinting to first base for softball practice. (I also then swing lefty just to balance it out.) I also just do regular sprints without swinging to mimic chasing after a ball. But I guess you should get a little more conditioned before doing this.

Have a great season! Jeanne

I play shortstop. I've usually always played infield, but I'm experimenting with the outfield just for fun in practice, too.

Thanks both of you for your tips and suggestions, I will get something figured out tonight and make a calendar so I can cross it off when I get it done. That will help keep me be organized until I get it so that it's just plain routine.

Thanks again, and good luck on your softball season, too.

Marcia :)

Oooh! You must be good to play short stop!

Last night my husband and I were cathcing in the yard and then he started throwing pop ups for me. It is surprising how much it can get your heart rate up. I mean, its not like I was running a lot and I'd get a little break after I threw back to him and he geared up to throw again.

Note: don't do shoulders the day of or before a game! I did them Wed. and last night I felt like I couldn't throw as well. I also stay away from legs right before a game too. I'll do them the day after a game instead.
