Hi everyone! I just wanted to let you all know that I had a beautiful, healthy baby girl on Tuesday, July 18, 2000, at 3:15 a.m. Lauren Elizabeth Porter weighed 8 lbs 1 oz and measured 21 inches long. She has a full head of dark brown hair (my hairdressing secret is out, I guess
) and has a wonderfully laid back temperment.
This beautiful little girl was more than enough compensation for what turned out to be a very long and difficult labor. I was supposed to be induced on Tuesday morning, but started having contractions (although I didn't know it at the time) around 7:00 a.m. on Sunday morning. By 6:30 that night, they were pretty regular, and we finally went to the hospital at midnight, only to be sent home at 2:00 a.m. with a prescription to help stop this "false" labor. After an entire night of contractions, including some back labor (the baby kept rolling over and then back), I was back to the doctor's office Monday morning, where they gave me a prostoglandin to help increase the contractions and then sent me to the mall to walk around for a few hours. (The looks my husband got from people in the mall!) They finally decided that I could go to the hospital at 2:30 on Monday, after which I got an epidural and blissed out to have some pain-free time for a while. It took another 13 hours for Lauren to finally come out (including almost 2 hours of pushing), and right toward the end they thought they might have to do a C-section. Luckily, Lauren crowned in two more pushes, and then it only took two more to get her out.
My compensation for 35 hours of labor (other than a beautiful baby) was that my recovery has been remarkable (knock wood!). I luckily did not have to have an episiotomy, and the small tear that did occur has not bothered me at all since the first day. Lauren is a breastfeeding champ, rarely fussy, and sleeps really well, so I'm not as tired as I anticipated.
If you'd like to see the world's most beautiful baby (my wholly unbiased opinion, of course
!), go to www.bhcs.com/babies and click on the icon for Baylor University Medical Center then page down until you see Lauren's name (please ignore the picture of dad and mom -- they were a little shell shocked by that point!).
Thanks everyone for all your advice and support during my pregnancy. Now where's the child rearing forum?
