avid readers?

I just thought of another author (VERY different from Jane Austen:)): David Sedaris. My two favorite books of his are NAKED and ME TALK PRETTY ONE DAY. He's absolutely hilarious.

I second the recommendation of "The Time Traveler's Wife". The story will stay with you a long time.

I am going through an Irish romance author phase right now. I have been reading Maeve Binchy and Cathy Kelly. There is another Irish author who wrote Angels and Rachel's Holiday, but I can't think of her name right now.

Love, love to read, so maybe I will think of others later.

Oh, for mystery & suspense, I would second Dan Brown, and an author named Elizabeth George whose books are primarly set in England with Scotland Yard detectives. Her books are pretty complex and follow a set of the same characters in different books.

Happy Hunting.......

I second Dan Brown! Fast Paced and engrossing.

Not really "feel good" books, but "adventure/thriller" (not horror) types. They keep me interested and are not tedious:

-Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child (The Relic & many others.) They each
have written alone too.
-Jack DuBrul (Vulcan's Forge & many others)
-James Rollins (Ice Hunt & others)
-Matthew Reilly (Temple & others)

Just some of my favorites.

Hi Mrsscififanec,

Yes, I have also read Diana Gabaldon. Outlander has to rank as one of my all-time favorite books of all time. I appreciate the recommendation, though.

Another author that I have found that writes a little similarly to Gabaldon is Sara Donati. She has 4 (I believe) books in a series and its loosely based on one of the characters in the Last of the Mohicans. I have not had the patience to read Cooper's classic novel, however.

Happy reading....Sandra S.

That's too funny Donna - I'm listening to Digital Fortress right now! I read Angels and Demons, and The DaVinci Code (my favorite book of all time). I like listening to books on my commute to school but prefer to actually read them since I don't always like the narrator on the audio books.

Was Deception Point good? I want to read that one next.

I only just started Disc #2 of Deception Point, but it starts out with a bang. As the other Dan Brown books did. What is Digital Fortress?

I know what you mean about the narrators. I got into listening to books last spring when visiting my mother, who was in the last stages of cancer and lived 4 hours away. I was listening to The Gunslinger series (Stephen King) and the narrator was great. Then some time between recording the 4th book in the series and the 5th, he was in a serious motorcycle accident and couldn't read the last 3. Well, the guy they got to read them is really annoying. He sounds like he's about 90 years old. I like to joke that they were so desparate to find someone to read the new books that they just grabbed the janitor.
He really is talented, though. Just doesn't have the sexiest voice.

I have a lot of respect for the people that read these audiobooks. You have to be a good actor. And some actors aren't very good narrators.

Hear! Hear! for The Outlander!!!!!! I absolutely love that series and recommend it to everyone who asks me what they should read.

Don't you sometimes wish someone would throw some cold water on Jamie and Claire once in a while, though? Those two are just out of control.
