Autumn, Can I have your opinion, please?

Hi Autumn,

You may remember that I've been TTC, and bought the TCOYF book that you recommended. I have been charting since the last day of my last menstrual cycle, and been very pleased with the results. I am pretty confident that I did ovulate, and that I identified the right day. The TCOYF software agrees with my assessment of when I ovulated, but I'm still so new at understanding my body's subtle changes that it is possible that ovulation occurred a day or two later than I thought. Reading cervical fluid when it is obscured by semen can be a tricky business! I also had a bit of a time trying to determine how to make my temperature-taking consistent, so I'm not 100% confident in the temps I took during the first half of the month, but I think they're reliable enough to warrant attention. I've got that all straightened out now.

Yes, obviously, we did ttc this month. I am now 17dpo, have not started menstruating, yet a pg test this morning was negative. Since my miscarriage I have had two full cycles, each 28 days exactly. My ovulation this cycle was exactly in the middle of a third 28 day cycle. I'm very confused because with my previous two pregnancies, the pg test indicated positive on the first day of my missed period (day 29 of my cycle). I'm using the same ultra-sensitive pg test (25iu of HCG), and I'm now on day 32 of my cycle, and it's still negative.

My temperatures indicate that I am pregnant. I had a fall-back thermal shift, and 8dpo my temps took a dip, but not below the coverline. I think that could have been implantation, or also the second surge of estrogen Weschler mentions in her book; it was accompanied by the creamy cervical fluid. Since that day, they have been steadily climbing, and this morning were the highest yet.

Here are the other things I've been noticing, and how I'm interpreting them:

Probable reasons why I might be pregnant:
- period 4 days late
- feeling mild waves of nausea within past couple of days
- just about got sick from the smell of a rotting potato yesterday, and almost couldn't eat my lunch
- breasts were feeling fuller yesterday, and today are beginning to feel mildly sore
- woke up this morning with three pimples
- basal temperature has been gradually increasing since ovulation
- feeling very hot during workouts, with less exertion
- feeling a bit dizzy when changing positions, especially during yoga

Probably reasons why I might not be pregnant:
- negative pregnancy test every day since expected menses
- strong desire to be pregnant may be making me read more into pms symptoms than they warrant
- the universe is against me

I know this is a lot of information. Does anything come to your mind about what might be going on? The TCOYF software indicates that tomorrow would be the day to take a pg test; am I just being too impatient? As I said before, I've never had to wait so long to get a positive test before. One of my own theories is that I ovulated 2 or 3 days later than I thought, so conception may have occurred a few days later, and I just don't have enough HCG to detect yet.

Even had I ovulated 2 or 3 days later, and I didn't conceive this month, the 14 day luteal phase would have ended yesterday, and at the very least my temperatures should be dropping in preparation for menstruation. Right?

Thank you for any insight you might have.
Sandra

Sandra what was your results? If you are pg congrats and if you're not hey remember it's all a learning process! I was bummed when AF came yesterday (although for some reason I just didn't think it would happen last month anyway), then quickly went out for some wine to share with my hubby! Hope all is well.

Hi Sandra! I am sorry it has taken me so long to respond. The last week has been hectic... I had my very first UTI (Thanksgiving) and apparently a "good one" per the ER doctor and my PMD... my DH had surgery Wednesday to repair a few disc problems. I am hoping you are indeed pregnant!!!!! If you are not or are still waiting, I'll give you my thoughts. Just give me a day or so to find them. :)

Keeping my fingers crossed for a postive result.

Hi Autumn and Julie,

I'm now 19dpo, still high temps, haven't taken a pg test today, but yesterday's test was still negative. So, in a nutshell I'm still at the same place I was a few days ago. I'm thinking that a second temp raise I detected 8dpo(and thought might possibly be the pregnancy triphasic shift) might have actually been ovulation. If that is the case, then I should get my period within the next 24 hours. My temp this morning was down a tiny smidge; not enough to say anything is truly happening, but it might just be the start of a drop that will be more noticeable tomorrow morning. I'm still feeling all sorts of hormonal symptoms, but I imagine they're premenstrual, not pg. Thank you for your interest. I'll keep you posted if anything finally happens.

Autumn, I hope both you and your husband are doing better!! That sounds like delicate surgery!

Julie, that's unfortunate that you didn't have success this month, but the glass of wine was a nice way to compensate :) Yes, it's a process.........

All the best,
Sandra

AF arrived this morning, and my newer, more reliable thermometer picked up the temperature dip, while the older one did not. So, certainly part of my problem has been with the thermometer. My cycle was therefore 34 days long (not counting the first day of menses; today). When I reflect back on my chart, I did actually record creamy cervical fluid 12 days ago, and my temperature, which had dipped, made a big jump up again. I interpreted all this as an initial fall-back thermal shift, followed by the smaller estrogen surge that Weschler says happens in the luteal phase. Hindsight tells me that wasn't the case at all, but that that was probably ovulation. I've started a brand new chart and will be using the new thermometer. So, hopefully I will have more accurate results this month.

All the best,
Sandra

Sandra, at least you learned something this month. I know though how frustrating it is trying month after month. It took me 8 months to get pregnant but I did get pregnant the second month of temp taking as I realized I ovulated late. If I not been charting i would have assumed I ovulated at day 14 but I actually ovulated around day 28 that cycle and convceived Alexis 2 christmas's ago. Good luck.

Thanks for your support, Shopaholic. Yes, it is a learning experience for sure. I'm relieve that AF finally arrived, so I am able to figure out what happened, and plan things a bit differently for this month. How encouraging to know that you had success using this method.

All the best to you and Alexis,
Sandra

Hey Sandra,

Just thought I would chime in and say "hello"! Good luck this month.
I was sort of in the same boat you were last month. My LP has been 12 days since I started charting and this past month was 16 days. I did get a faint positive on 14DPO so I'm wondering if it wasn't a "chemical" pregnancy that you hear people talk about. In any case, we are working on things again this month.

What CD day are you on now? I'm at CD 15 today.

Janna

Hi Janna! Nice to hear from you! I was under the understanding that each woman's LP is constant every month, no matter what. Therefore, if the time between estimated ovulation and onset of menses is longer than that, you likely ovulated later than you thought. However, the faint positive on 14dpo suggests that you may have conceived but that implantation wasn't fully successful. Is that what you mean by "chemical" pregnancy? I'm not familiar with that term.

"Working on things". LOL! Such a funny thing to say, wrt creating a human life, huh? It's nice to see you are still feeling positive about the whole thing. I'm CD 5, so have a ways to go before we need to get to work again. Of course, DH is a big proponent of practice!

Good luck with your attempts this month! Keep me updated on how it goes, please.

All the best,
Sandra

Hi Sandra! Sorry, once again, for the delay. My house is in chaos as I type. ;)

I am glad you are no longer in limbo re: what's going on with your cycle. I wish it would have been the alternative outcome. :( It looks as though you found the answers to most of your questions... I just have a few things to add.

The luteal phase is 14 days + or - a day of two. So, for example, you can ovulate on day 14 and have a 30 day cycle... completely within "normal".

My temperatures sometimes don't drop until after I start my menses.

I am wishing for a very special Christmas gift for you ladies TTC. BEst of luck to you. If you have any questions, I don't mind to answer. Hopefully, things will calm down soon.

Oh, and DH and I are doing okie dokie. I am fully recovered, my DH is doing quit well. He picked up the baby the other night though... he received a nice LOOOOONG lecture. I am trying not to be too hard on him... he has been forced to stop smoking (he smoked a "few" a day"... no more. The doctor told him it was a BIG no-no and would cause further degeneration of the spine.

Well, I've rambled enough. Take care!

Autumn
