Cathlete
I am so glad people here are discussing cat litter and cat pee issues because now I can ask for opinions on something I've been thinking about a lot: A cat toilet. I'm not talking about those expensive self-cleaning litter boxes. I mean an actual toilet that flushes (which would mean running a second sewage line), lies low to the ground, is made of porcelain with a "seat" you can lift to clean it, and which you can train cats and maybe even small dogs to use. Most of my co-workers are doubtful but most don't own multiple cats. Some points I argue whenever this discussion comes up at work:

1) A flushing toilet immediately gets rid of the root cause of odor. No odor, no behavioral issues associated with cats smelling each others marks and remarking territory. Would a real toilet completely end spraying and marking? It might. I'd be willing to give it a try.
2) There would be no kitty litter granules scratching up your hardwood floors and driving you up the wall. I sweep up kitty litter from the bathrooms twice daily and I know I'd LOVE to never have to do that ever again. That stuff gets EVERYWHERE!!!
3) You wouldn't spend time worrying about possible health issues associated with your cats ingesting the granules they dig out of their paws.
4) Your back wouldn't be destroyed from lugging those heavy boxes and bags of kitty litter.
5) I recently read that USED kitty litter takes up massive amounts of landfill space. If everyone had cat toilets all that space would be freed up.
6) Imagine never having to change-out another litter pan. Doesn't the thought make you absolutely giddy???

There are kits for toilet training cats to use our existing toilets but there are drawbacks. Most people don't want to use the same toilet as their cat(s) and there are definite weight limitations. I have one cat who's HUGE and could never balance on a toilet seat. If I were to get my other four cats toilet trained but not her, it would just create confusion for them. A low-to-the-ground toilet with a wide flat seat featuring a center 4-5" round hole in the middle would work for any cat and probably most small dogs. Imagine. No lugging heavy bags of fresh litter or carting away the nasty used stuff (which I have to drag down a long back lawn to the alley). No more chronic sweeping of floors. No more running around with a roll of paper towels and a spray bottle of enzymatic cleaner... of having to drop everything to clean up another accident... If you have cats and hate litter boxes just imagine how great it would be get your cats trained and then never have to do anything more than use a toilet brush and The Works once a week. Ahhhh. Obviously, it's not a product that would catch on right away and, perhaps it would be best to experiment with the device in Europe, first - where second sewage lines often already exist (for bidets) in many bathrooms.

I would be very interested in comments from cat owners, pro or con, on this topic. I'm at a point where I'd love to design one and have it installed in my home anyway, even if it never goes mainstream just because I'm so tired of cleaning up stains and granules. Thoughts and debate are appreciated.

I think that actually sounds heavenly! Really, it sounds like a dream! I would be a wonderful thing but I can't imagine training my 3 kitties to do anything like that. They are sooo independent! Somtimes I thik I'm the pet and they are the owners. Anyway, if someone came up with a guaranteed system I might think about it. I would not pay the price for another sewer line though.

Sirensongwoman, I think it's a great idea and you should work on it!

I have to exercise early in the morning before my brain figures out what I'm doing :)

I have thought about this for a long time. I wanted a cat toilet that could be plumbed right into my existing system.. There was one out for a while that you could hook up to your washing machine line. Then someone posted somewhere that it blew up on her! She had been raving about it for some time. We actually have a bidet in one of the bathrooms so that would work. It is my dream that someone will put out a cat toilet!

Girl if you design it I will buy it!! I think that sounds like a great idea. I have looked at the one at petsmart to train your cat to use your toilet. I just worry about it because I have one cat that is facinated with water and I cant leave the toilet seats open or he will drink the water! I think you shoud work on this!

It sounds wonderful, but I think would be problematic in practice. I also have a cat that is fascinated with water. Water from the toilet would be all over the floor. I actually had to train him to leave his water in his bowl rather than splash it all over the counter where he eats.

My other cat has no conscience about the concept of "aim" when using the box. She thinks it's enough to just get in the box and pee - to hell with lowering her a$$. Just get in and to hell with the consequences!

But I do like the original idea!

It's a great idea, but if you're thinking of producing it, you should know someone already thought of it. I've seen them somewhere (maybe "Cats" magazine?).

I found some info online: http://www.catgenie.com/?R=cf

One of my collegues wants to do the regular toilet training method with her future cats. The things I wouldn't like about that are: you might not be able to teach all cats to flush (though there is one on Youtube that does), and the toilet seat would always be open (a pet peeve of mine: I always keep mine fully closed unless it's in use).

I like this idea but I'm having a hard time imagining getting our cats to do it. It seems to me that most cats have a mind of their own and will do what they want to do, when they want to do it, not when we want them to. So trying to train them would be frustrating I would think.

With that said, my husband used to have a cat that used the toilet. My mother-in-law still talks about Velvet who one day decided she wanted to use the toilet rather than the litter box. That cat continued to use the toilet and even flushed it! So I guess it is possible....

My co-workers keep telling me I should start first by trying to train my cats to use the existing toilet. I don't have a problem with this but, since my Gracie is too big to balance on the seat I've thought about cutting a 4" hole in the LID and using one of those cat toilet training kits to train them to use it (and you can keep the lid down). I can just flush it when I get home from work. But, here's the problem: I have five cats and, to train one cat, you're supposed to sequester them in the bathroom for up to a week. That's where the litter boxes are and if I move them I know I'll end up with a whole new set of behavioral issues with the other four. I moved one of the litter boxes two feet from where it had been and went through MONTHS of cleaning up pee from the floor where the box HAD been! Good Lord. I have one co-worker who put her hand on my shoulder and said "Honey, you may get two cats trained, you may even get four. But if you think that last cat is going to cooperate, your living in Fantasy Land." Hmm. I wrote somewhere else on this board that after years of letting the housework... accumulate (I was working 12-hour days/6-days a week and now have two days off) I spent my 8-day vacation cleaning like a nut case. Now, I was always pretty good about keeping the boxes scooped out and changed out but, when you're tired... a lot else does not get done well or at all. Clean boxes weren't enough for my cats because I woke up and came home to little pee presents in the bathroom and my upstairs kitchenette nearly every day and night. So, while I was on my "vacation" I got kind of obsessed with keeping everything I cleaned clean (I'm still obsessed and still cleaning every chance I get and things are finally looking great). I used to keep a cheap vacuum cleaner near the two catbox areas but I was never real religious about using them. I found out a simple broom, dust pan and whisk broom used twice daily was quicker, easier and more effective so now that's what i do. All I know is once I got the house real clean THE PEE STAINS STOPPED APPEARING EVERYWHERE. When the house is clean and there's not kitty litter all over, they pee in the box. When that's not the case they let me know they don't like it. MY CATS ARE CRITIQUING MY HOUSEKEEPING SKILLS!!! Do you believe that crap??? Let them work 12-hour days and see how much housework they get done, dammit. All this time I thought they were acting out because they missed me but no, they just wanted me to clean the joint...

I think it would be great if it works....thing is, I've always heard that not every cat can be trained to use an alternative to cat boxes because of their instinct to scratch. I would also wonder how beneficial it would be for multiple cat homes (like mine - I have 12 cats). If this would work it would be an absolutely enormous blessing though, because I am totally with you on how annoying the cat litter can be.

Um...did you see my post about the flushing cat toilet that attaches to existing plumbing? (I posted a link to info about it). The type of thing you are looking for already exists, and may help you with your dilemma.
