Article I read in Women's Health

Hello!
I am new to this forum but not new to Cathe and her work-outs. I first saw her on FitTV last November and have enjoyed her work-outs since.
I have a question about an article I read in Sept/Oct 2005 issue of Women's Health. It indicated if you exercise "the best way to resist 20 more minutes of sack time is to rouse yourself from bed and touch your toes ..." Not a problem there but then it goes on to say, "... then eat a banana or an orange ... and add a cup of coffee."
Ok, my question is if I was to try eating first, how soon after I eat and drink the coffee could I safely start my exercise program? I have found that once I have my coffee and I'm relaxed, I don't want to exercise.
My routine now is exercise first thing before I change my mind. :)

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks!

Day 238 of being Smoke Free!

Hi Taffi,

I think it comes down to doing whatever works for you to get moving! I get up 20min to 1 hour before exercising in the morning. I drink coffee and watch TV. The time helps me wake up (coffee too) but it can backfire especially if I turn TV on and get into a program. I also put my alarm clock in the next room so I have to get out of bed to turn if off. This really helps me. I don't hit snooze and just the walk to the other room and then a trip to the bathroom since I am up does the trick for me.

Happy morning exercising!

During the work week, I get up at 4:30 a.m. to work out. I don't eat or drink anything ahead of time (except the water I sip during the workout). There's no way I would ever get up even earlier to eat something first (and I can't delay my workout at all because I have to go to work). I have never found working out on an empty stomach in the a.m. to be a problem for me. In fact, on weekends I often eat before working out and I don't find that I have any extra energy or strength compared to my empty-stomach-workouts.

My opinion is that if working out first thing in the morning without eating first works for you, then keep doing it.

I get up at 05:30 and start my workout approx. at 6AM. I actually have the banana + coffee in my pre-workout protein shake. I can workout straight after with no problems. On the occasion where I run late and skip making the shake, I noticeably can't do a proper workout (strength or cardio).

I am also new to this forum. I just wanted to add that I read in a fitness magazine you are more prone to injury the first 30-40 minutes upon waking up. I believe you just have to make sure all your muscles are warmed up. As far as eating before or not that all depends on what works for you. It has always been a subject of many opinions as to what is best. Some do eat and some don't just what ever works for you.
