Arms look better in front view than side!

I'm finding this maddening. I work as hard on upper body as I can, and when I either look in the mirror or look down at myself, my arms look pretty good. But then when I turn and look at my arm from the side, it's depressingly W I D E!!!!! I notice when I lose weight, the fat doesn't budge from the upper arms. :-(

Would you all suggest more cardio versus UB lifting?

Anyone else notice this kind of thing?

Susanne-
Bumping for you as this is my only mind boggling question! I could have written your post. Thanks for asking it... I keep thinking there must be some muscle that I am not hitting but for the life of me cant figure it out. Lets hope some of the experienced Diva's can help!

When you look at it from the side, is it pressed up against your body, thereby squashing all the muscle, flesh, whatever, up against you (kinda like what happens to your thighs when you sit on a couch)?

Have you tried flexing your arms out to the sides and looking at them that way?

Ditto!

And to take it one step further, every time that I think I notice a hint of definition, I look in the mirror, and it's totally not there.

Gymstyles, light weight- many reps, combos of those....NOTHING works on my arms. They have always stayed the same size, and now I know that they always will.
I've given up.

How hard do you work your delts? The first thing I tell people when they say I have well defined arms is that it's all in the shoulders. If you don't have good shoulders, you can't see your bis or tris.

After a trainer commented on my lack of rear delt definition about 2 years ago I added in an extra 6 sets of rear delts each week w/my leg/chest routine. It's made a huge difference! My shoulders are more defined & it's definitely made my bis/tris look better. Maybe some extra delt work would help?

I will definitely try anything!

I've always thought that I've worked my shoulders more than any other muscle groups, but maybe that's not enough. I'll give that a-go and see if it helps.

Coming in to the summer months, I'm so self counscious about it that I hide them under loose sleeved shirts. They are disproporationately large for the rest of my body.

Thanks for the suggestion!

My abs look fine from the front, but from the side...oy!

The solution: always face people rather than letting them see you from the side. ;-)

I have been thinking this alot lately too so I'm glad someone else put it out there. I always think I have nice arms from the front and then from the side I feel much differently. I will try more rear delt exercises too...maybe that will be the trick.

Ya'll need to pose like John Basedow. You know, the Fitness Made Simple guy? A slight twist to the left, or right, depending on where you're looking, hitch the appropriate thumb under your tight oblique and place your other hand on the opposing hip. You're all set! No one will ever see you from the side, and you can show off your Cathe delts and command the room!

Works for him...:7
