Hello all,

I wonder if there are any fellow vegetarians/vegans in this forum. I've been a vegetarian for 6 years now... I don't eat eggs but I do dairy.

How is your diet? I want to build lean muscles and get rid of some fat/cellulite... I'm not overweight, maybe i'd like to lose 5 pounds of Fat, that's it and I want some tips and advise.

Thank you much :)

Carla

Hi Carla,

I was vegan for awhile and am now a vegetarian. I was doing some eggs and dairy, but recently had to give up the dairy. So I am feeling a little lost as to how to get the protein.

I also am looking to lose about 5lb and "lean out". Hoping some others have some great input.

I know everyone says you can't burn fat and build muscle at the same time, does that apply even if its just five pounds. Do you have to lose the five pounds first?

There are a number of vegans and vegetarians who hang out here so if you don't get a response soon just bump your message up there for some comments.

Hello...
I am a Vegan and I have found this board to be pretty Veggie friendly. There are a few people on here that follow "Eat To Live". I do not know what your current diet is like but I find that when I eat mostly whole foods I do not have trouble leaning out. However if I start eating to much pita chips and salsa then the problems start hehe. A typical day for me is something like this:

Breakfast: Fruit Smoothie (frozen fruit, 1 tbsp ground flax seed, a serving a protein powder, a serving of rice milk)
Snack: An Apple with 1 tbsp almonds butter
Lunch: Chickpea or Lentil Curry
Snack (post workout): Hemp Banana Carob Smoothie
Dinner: Asian Style Tofu Salad

There are a lot of good sources of protein for vegans some of them include:
Tempeh, Tofu, Rice or Hemp Protein Powders, Hemp Seeds, Beans, Seitan, TVP,

Good Luck....Jacque

Hi Carla, I'm one of many vegans here. Have you read Eat to Live? It's a GREAT nutrition book that offers weight loss advice. It's not a typical weight loss book that offers no or very little scientific evidence. He sites tons of studies (I believe over 600), to back up his advice. He also addresses other weight loss books and why he thinks many of them are really unhealthy. I'm sorry to say that cellulite will probably not go away, although you can help diminish the appearance. You'll need some strength/weight training to accomplish that. If you 'do' dairy, does that mean that you eat cheese? If so, I would reconsider that since cheese is VERY calorie dense (even the 'lite' cheese). You can get quality protein from vegetable sources so it's not a necessary part of a healthy diet. If you want some more detailed advice, you may want to give us an idea of what your current diet is like (for instance, what do you eat in a given day?), and what your exercise habits are.

There are quite a few veg*ns on here (if you do a search for "vegan," you can find some previous threads).

I went vegetarian in 1976 (over 30 years ago---but how can that be, since I'm not a day over 25? LOL!), and vegan around 1991 (the transition was less abrupt, and I was actually 'almost vegan' since early on in my vegetarianism.

I try to be primarily a whole foods vegan (always vegan, but sometimes not so whole foods!). I avoid most processed foods, don't drink sodas (except for an occasional health food store one), attempt to get a lot of raw food in (harder in the winter!, but I went high raw--80% +-- for a few weeks this summer). I also incorporate a lot of heathy foods and beverages like maca, green tea, mangosteen, goji berries, hemp protein powder (the best vegan protein powder, IMO).

My most recent dietary changes have been influenced somewhat by Brendan Brazier's "Thrive" (he's a vegan Canadian triathlete and ultramarathoner, who just recently won some ultramarathon--that's a race over 100 miles). I also use his "Vega" meal replacement and bars.

I attempt to stick with healthy snacks, like Larabars, fruit, Vega bars and other whole-food bars.

Quite a few other vegans on the site are following Dr. Joel Fuhrman's "Eat to Live" plan, which is a vegan diet for disease prevention (that also works for weight loss).

>I am feeling a little lost as to how to get the protein.

Soy: tempeh, tofu, edamame, mock 'chicken' or 'egg' salad.
Lentils: soup, loaf.
Grains: quinoa, buckwheat, amaranth, teff.
Protein powder for smoothies: hemp protein (the best, IMO), pea protein, pea and rice.

There is protein in almost every food: greens are around 25% protein. Getting enough protein isn't hard, unless you eat a lot of citrus fruits or a lot of processed foods.

Another vegetarian here! My son is vegan, but I do eat eggs (only cage free, however) and cottage cheese -- and dark chocolate.

I eat a lot of soy products (though some of my choices are probably too processed). Trader Joe's has a soy pita that I really like (DH doesn't like the taste), it's high in protein. Whole Foods has soy angel hair pasta that is very high in protein. I love Boca chik'n patties.

Though I don't cook much, I use soy crumbles and make a great vegan chili; I also enjoy black bean and rice vegan burritos.

"Organic" bars has a high protein bar that I often eat at work, it also packs the protein.

I'm not as clean an eater as many others, I have to have my chocolate and coffee every day. But, the combo works for me.

Hi Carla-

Fellow lifetime vegetarian (now vegan--2 years give or take). Like many others I strive for a whole foods approach to eating and try to cut out anything artificial. I find that my best results come from upping the amount of veggies I eat, even if I don't consciously change anything else. And not eating late at night helps me to have a flatter stomach first thing in the morning, but that's about it, lol:7

Thank you all for your replies... wow, I didn't know you were all here!!! Cool.....

I do have the eat to live book.... I took it last night and started reading it again....

I have no time for cooking so I eat a lot of frozen meals.... mostly Amy's organics.....

For breakfast I usually have fruits and yogurt or oatmeal.
For lunch - any frozen Amy's meal or Salad
For dinner - it varies sometimes canned soup, salad, peanut butter and jelly, pasta, tofu and veggies.
I always snack... always... I need to eat every 2-3 hours.... so I bring plenty of fruits, or carrots with hummus, etc.

My main problem is CANDY.... honestly I eat candy EVERY DAY... mint patties or cookies.... and I not only have 1 cookie but 5 or more....
I can't control my cravings for sugar... mainly in the form of cookies... I don't have the will power.... last night I went out to eat and I had a Caprese Salad, broccoli rabe and bean soup.... Fine!!! Then I had a lemon pie and when I got home I ate 5 cookies....

I'm sooooo bad......

Anyone relates??????

A small change you might want to try is at dinner, replace the canned soup with 1/2 c to 3/4 cup of rinsed canned beans. You can add some salsa or something to make it more interesting .

It might be that the sodium in the Amy's meal + canned soup on a single day may be making your cravings worse...

Another idea is to have your carbs/grain servings earlier in the day around the times you exercise, leaving more protein & veg & fruit for evening -- this has helped me with sugar cravings.....

Another nice sweet treat is making soy milk hot cocoa: Silk Vanilla Lite Soy Milk + unsweetened cocoa/heated up ---You may not need to add any sugar because the Vanilla Lite milk is already sweetened up (but not as much as regular Silk Vanilla Soy Milk.)

Oh, I so relate. I am totally addicted to sweets. My drawer at work is full of dark chocolate, tootsie rolls, ginger snaps, chocolate digestive cookies, mint patties. I have to put flavored creamers in my coffee (big time). I never drink sodas and eat a very healthy diet of vegetables, fruit and protein. If only I could give up the sweets as I know they harp on the insulin problem so much now.
