Are the colored puzzle mats same as the black?

I decided I'm gonna put puzzle mats in my basement instead of aerobic flooring, mostly b/c of that stupid plumbing I have hanging out of the ceiling that breaks the space in half. I just don't see spending oodles of money when I'll never really LOVE the space.

So I'm going w/the puzzle mats. I see that you can get multi-colored or just black. I hate to get the black b/c the space is already so dark, but the colored mats are labeled as "play mats" & the black mats are labeled as "exercise mats." Are they the same? I don't want to hurt myself w/the wrong floor!

ETA: one more really dumb question for the mathematically challenged--square footage is width X length, right? :+

Laura - check the thickness of the mats. If the colored and black are the same thickness, I think you're okay. But my bet is that the exercise mats might be a bit thicker - which is better, naturally.

And yes, you're right about square footage.

Ooooh I just ordered them! I am so excited! And they do come in solid colors so I got royal blue. I'm going w/light blue & green on the walls--after checking gyms (all white walls) & home workout DVDs (lots of blue & green combinations) I decided to go w/the color.

I'll start painting this w/e--the home gym is finally coming together! :) :) :) :)

The mats I have are colored on one side and black on the other I got them at Sam's Club). The colored side has a "greasy" residue on it and I felt myself (and my step) sliding around on it, and my shoes were slick on the bottom after working out on it. I flipped them over to the black side and the problem is gone, the black side is fine. I was a bit bummed because the bright colors really cheered up my unfinished basement. Hopefully you won't have that problem with yours.

I think they should be OK--the sales dude said they were the same as the black, they're non-skid on one side & smooth on the other. I'm so happy w/the price too--$184 including shipping, much better than the thousands it was gonna cost me for the aerobics floor.

And it'll be good for resale--not as good as an aerobics floor (only b/c it'd look like hardwood) but with the colors it might come off well as a potential playroom for kids.

Laura,

Where did you order your mats from? I need to change my flooring.

Linda

PS: I got Kimberly Spreen's Absolute Kickboxing. I haven't done it yet, but it looks like a lot of fun. Are there any other fun kickbox DVD's you would recommend?

Hi Linda--I got them here:

http://www.getrung.com/colors.html

I actually found them on ebay but ordered directly from the company b/c I was so pleased w/the price.

Do you have P90X Kenpo X? It's a little more karate than kickboxing but it's one of my favorites & doesn't need as much space as most home DVDs. Also Amy Bento's Kickbox Extreme is really fun if you have the patience to learn her style & moves.

But I must say out of all my KB workouts Spreen's is my favorite--actually recommended by pixie9/Carolyn. Thanks again Carolyn! :)

I need to buy a package of mats so my kids can jump-rope in the basement (cement floor with thin carpeting). I was going to go to Home Depot and buy the colored puzzle ones..money is tight!! Does anybody know if those will be good enough? I don't have a membership to Sams. I very much appreciate any advice you can share...TIA Peggy

I think they're the same? They looked the same on the webites. Probably the best way to figure it out is to compare the thickness of the mats.

This is completly off subject, but I just have to say.. WoW, Laura. I did Absolute KB this morning and what fun!:D And I don't think I have ever worked my core so hard :p It was firing all over the place, front, sides, back, and I didn't even do the bonus core segment.
I did the interval mix, because I did upper body yesterday and was'nt sure if my shoulders could take all the combat intervals together. I certainly looking forward to trying it though.

Carolyn, I've jumped rope on the store bought mats and they were just fine.

Linda, so glad you liked it! I usually pair it with one or two sections of Core Max just to get a REALLY serious core workout.......;-)

Laura, your insane! I think I'll wait until I have to workout down and am looking for MORE of a challange before I try that!

And by the way I do not have Kenpo X. Maybe I will give Amy a try. I am puting my neck out here but I think AKB was much more fun than Cardio Kick, KPC or KIck Max.
