Hi there!

As you know, I LOVE LOVE LOVE your mish moshes!! Any new or recent ones? My favs are the 15-15-15-15 one and the Imax Elite (I think - with Imax 3 blasts, SB Blasts, Imax 2 blasts and BC cardio section, which I sometimes do with the new 4DS BC). Just wondering if you have any other cardio killers with the newer work outs?

TIA!!:D

Hi, Tygra and thanks for your kind words!

Actually, since I got a DVD recorder about a year and a half ago, in which I can record anything from any workout onto a blank disc in any mixture I want, I've kind of gotten away from traditional mish-moshing. However, one mish-mosh that I'm particularly proud of is this one:

EITHER

Circuit Max warm-up and hi/lo cycles, fast-forwarding thru the first resistance cycle; OR
10-10-10 warm-up, kickbox and hi/lo;

THEN:

I-Max 3 blast only premix;

THEN:

I-Max 2 blast only premix omitting warm-up (to really keep the mustard on the hot-dog, skip the recoveries after each blast by doing a chapter-next with your remote)

That one's only an hour, but what an hour!

Enjoy!

Oh my dear sweet lord. I need a nap just from reading that! AJock--you're crazy!! (But I love ya!) I'm looking forward to another "Turkey Blaster Mish-Mosh" like last years! That was one of my faves!

Hi A-Jock! I'm very curious as to what DVD recorder you purchased? I'm thinking of doing some nice little circuit mish moshes but would love to know the best way to do it and DVD recording sounds like the best. There's not that many multiple disk players and they are SOOO BIG, too big for my place. And this sounds like the perfect solution! Did you hook it up to your other dvd player in order to record from it? And did you have to hook it up to a multiple disk player in order to record pieces from multiple disks onto the one disk or can you do it from a one disk player and keep changing disks whilst recording.? And did it come with instructions on how to hook it up to another disk player and record from multiple disks or you figured it out yourself? Sorry, to ask sooo many questions but I want to figure it out somewhat before I purchase. Thanks for your help A-Jock!

Hi, Twinkletoes! The DVD recorder that I got was a Panasonic that was on sale for about $98.00 back in the winter 2007. We have it hooked up / through the 5-disc player which is then hooked up to the TV. I do have to turn the recorder on if I want to play something on the 5-disc player, something about one thing feeding thru the other.

The 5-disker is the only DVD player I have in my workout space, so it's not like I have options to choose from.

Regarding actually recording from Cathe's DVDs onto blank discs, actually it's easier to just keep using one disc slot, switching out discs as needed, rather than try to cycle through more than one disc slot. Yes, that means you do an awful lot of tray-open / tray closing, but it's worth it.

DH was the one who got the recorder hooked up to the DVD player and then the TV. I couldn't do it if you put a gun to my head. I don't think he used any instructions, just his own knowledge of All Things TV.

I do hope you get a recorder. It has totally, totally revolutionized my workout program. I'll give you but one example of a DVD I cooked up a few months ago and did just last night, I call it "Step+Boot Camp":

Body Max 1 power circuit cardio blast #1
4DS-BC blast #1
Body Max 2 power circuit cardio blast #2
Boot Camp cardio blast #1
HSTA step blast #1
Drill Max blast #1

Body Max 1 power circuit cardio blast #2
4DS-BC blast #6 (suicides)
Body Max 2 power circuit cardio blast #3
Boot Camp cardio blast #2
HSTA step-blast #2
Drill Max blast #2

And so on for two more complete cycles. Another one that I cooked up when the 4-day split came out was my own distorted version of 4DS-BC:

Warm-up
Blast 1 (omit breathing break)
Blast 2 (omit breathing break)
Blast 3 (omit breathing break
Blast 2
Blast 3
Blast 4
Blast 3
Blast 4
Blast 5

And so on until these layered cycles came back to blast #1.

The only drawback is that you have to record your discs in real time; you can't just copy a chapter like on a computer. But it's time well spent, IMHO.

HTH - let me know if you have any more questions!

Hi Aquajock! Thank you for the detailed replys, that has helped me SOOO much!! I just bought a Samsung recorder tonight and just finished hooking it up. Talk about pulling my hair out!! That's a workout in itself!! It's these times that I REALLY MISS having a husband around!! Man, I could use a Man!!! Then just as I finally suss out how to activate the DVD recorder onto the TV screen which took a good 1/2 hour to figure out, one of the plugs in the extension cord blew out. Figures!! Anyway it works, so I'm so excited!! Tomorrow I'm buying a power cord and will start my first recording. Wish me luck.

Your description on how you use your custom dvd's is incredible! Actually having a custom mix dvd for each part of your workout is EXTREME!! WOW, I never thought of that!! You are the MIXING QUEEN!! I'd LOVE to be able to be half as fit as you and Cathe & her team and half the people on this forum!! You guys are my benchmark!! By the way I used to LOVE, LOVE, LOVE cardio step-leg circuit workouts, too and still do. And would sometimes program my own mixes. However, in the spring I did too much too soon and got a revisit of Patellar femoral syndrome (a maltracking of the knee cap) and was out of commission for a while. It was devastating to me as I love being this active and LOVE step & leg work. And it took so long for me to get to that point. However, I continued doing upper body weight workouts and I spent my whole summer doing physio rehab on my knees. Amazingly, I'm back to doing some step workouts (1-2x a week and on just the step platform — a bit of a drag but you gotta start somewhere!) and can even do some minor impact, not big plyo moves, mind you. I also do power yoga which is great for the knees in building the correct muscles (warrior poses) that track the patellar properly. And I'm able to do some inner, outer and leg extension work on the machines. But I'm banished from doing my favorite Cathe leg work of squats, lunges, etc for now. So, my circuit workouts will consist of step & upper body, (however I may be able to add in some hover squats which I love!!). So those are my plans for my recorder and who knows what else I'll concoct. So thank you so much for all your help and ideas and maybe one day I'll be able to do one of your AWE INSPIRING blast mish moshes or maybe just a 1/4!! Hee!! Hee!!

Twinkie, you'll be amazed at how the DVD recorder opens up your workout world. Once you've cooked up a couple of discs, your imagination will get sparked, and it will be hard to STOP coming up with new ideas. A couple of my Cathe friends (we call ourselves The Killer Bees - Three Blondes and a Baldie) also have DVD recorders, and they're having a blast!

I know I'm a geek, but I've put all of my favorite Cathe interval drills (step and floor alike), as well as all of the lifting drills from Cathe's workouts, onto a series of Excel spreadsheets, and it's a moment's work to copy-and-paste a new workout mix while I'm at the computer, print that up, and then hit the recorder when I have a spare hour or so.

Just in passing - you have NO idea how much I'm looking forward to the STS Plyo Legs, not just as stand-alone workouts as produced but for their potential to integrate with some of the step- and floor interval stuff!

Have fun!

HELP!!

Aquajock, it will open up another world if I can just get it to work!! I can't seem to figure out the configuration at all. If I attach the DVD to the Recorder and the Recorder to the TV then I can only view the Recorder on my TV. I can't get the DVD player on my TV screen. I can't connect the Recorder to the DVD player and then the DVD player to my TV as the DVD player only as one set of Red, White and Yellow plugs. Aren't we supposed to be able to access either one of the DVD player or DVD Recorder on the TV screen? I have to be able to initialize the disks on the Recorder then switch to the DVD player to play the disk I want to record and be able to see it on the TV screen and then record. Can you tell me exactly what plugs you used to connect to each item. I'm flummuxed!! I've tried every combination and nothing works to be able to toggle between viewinig the Recorder or the DVD player on the TV screen. I have nobody to ask. My dad is too old to help me. And my brother too busy with his family to ever consider helping me. I have no techie male or female friends, I'm at a loss! If I can't figure this out I'll have to return it. And I really don't want to do that. I hate giving up!! HELP!!

Aquajock! I figured it out!! I got my Dad on the phone and we rationalized it out. My dad is amazing!! (What would I do without men!! There awesome!!) He's a little older and sometimes gets confused but not this time. He really helped me to sort it out. And we realized I needed the TV's remote to access both to the TV screen!! I forgot all about that!! I never use the TV remote otherwise. I only used it to access my VCR player and completely erased that out of the equation!! It's recording right now as I write!! Yippee!! Thanks for all your help!!

Twinkie, when in doubt, call a man. (DON'T FLAME ME, SISTERS!) I've yet to meet a man who couldn't put together a TV or its many million accessories / add-ons, even if he lived his life in a cave. I think it's about motivation - men and TVs are a natural mix. I think my own DH married our Sony Bravia XBR top-of-the-line-Rolls-Royce (his own description) behind my back.

Now get recording, sister! This morning, I'm doing one of my favorite mixes, that I call "Guilt Killer 2008":

Circuit Max warm-up and hi/lo cycle 1
Boot Camp original cardio blasts 1 and 2
Drill Max cardio blast #6 (including squat-thrust-tuck jumps)
4DS-BC cardio blasts 1-4 (omitting breathing/set-up breaks)
Kick Max blast challenge blasts 4-6

Circuit Max hi/lo cycle 2
Boot Camp original cardio blasts 5-6
Drill Max cardio blast #3
4DS-BC cardio blasts 5-8
Kick Max blast challenge blasts 1-3

10-10-10- hi/lo cycle
Boot Camp original cardio blasts 7-8
Drill Max cardio blast #5 holding a weight plate
4DS-BC cardio blasts 9-12
Kick Max blast challenge blasts 8-10

Let me know what your own first DVD creation is!

A-Jock

Hey Aquajock! I just made my very first DVD mix last night and did it today! I was very proud of myself! I only did a 2 disk mix for now but as I get more familiar and maybe as my knees get better I can get more complicated mixes like you. My mix was:
The Viper + Muscle Max Upper body:
cardio & weights warmup + combo 1
Imax 2, Interval 1 w/blast
Muscle Max Chest
C&W combo 2
Imax 2, Interval 2 w/blast
MM Shoulders
C&W combo 3
Imax 2, Interval 3 w/blast
MM Biceps
C&W combo 4
Imax 2, Interval 4 w/blast
Triceps
Viper Abs
Viper Stretch

I LOVED it!! I only got up to the 3rd cycle when I did it and then I was pooped!! I had to modify slightly on one of the blasts but other than that I could do it full out. It was so much fun!! I still have ALOT of stamina and cardio endurance to work up to but I only started Cathe last February and had to stop in the summer because of knee issues so I have to give myself a break and be patient. I've also had chronic fatigue and though I'm not in the centre of it any more I still have to work around fatigue. But I'm having so much fun with it and getting stronger and more fit everyday!! WooHoo!!

My next mix, I think will be Drill Max with everything but Drill Max's cardio. The cardio will be replaced with Body Max 2 Power Circuits and Imax 2 Intervals (Drill 2's cardio will be Power Circuit 1, Drill 3-Power Circuit 2, Drill 4-Imax 2 Interval 5, etc.). And in a perfect world, if I didn't have knee problems, I'd love to do a mix like this:
Low Max Step
Low max Blast
BM2 Power Circuit
Imax 3 Interval & Blast
HST Legs

I'd also like to mix some other instructors like Amy Bento's step with Cathe's weights, etc. The sky's the limit!!! I LOVE your mish moshes!! I just wish I had the knees & cardio power that you have!! Who knows maybe I'll surprise myself! In the meantime I'm having fun!!

By the way "Guilt Killer 2008" is AWESOME!! How any human being can do that is beyond me!! You floor me Aquajock!!!

Ohhhhhhh, Twinkie - we are indeed Sisters Of The Recorder! Your maiden mish-mosh sounds wonderful! One thing I've found in planning out custom DVD mixes is that they are VERY easy to draft out on paper, and I tend to go with the nosebleed stuff to make sure I'm not slacking off, then when I actually do it for the first time I always hit a point at least once when I hit the PAUSE button and say "WHAT WAS I THINKING?!" Uber-nosebleed time. But, that's what makes you get stronger - putting more and more challenging drills in.

You're on your way, Cupcake. Oops - I mean Twinkie. (That's my new name for you.) Tonight, I'm doing my I-Max2/I-Max3 salad, in which I've recorded alternating I-Max 2 and I-Max 3 blasts interspersed with a few Low Impact Circuit blasts from LIC's Blast Only premix. To be followed up with one of my favorite new core mixes, Butts/Gutts stability ball elbow planks/circles and rollouts with PUB stability ball planks, then followed up with a Sharon Twombly floor ab routine. (If you haven't checked out Sharon Twombly's ab routines, give her a look. She's GOOD!)

Keep up the recording and let me know what you're doing. I'm always up for new ideas!

A-Jock

Hey Aquajock, it's a relief to know you're human after all!! Hey I think we're on the same page! I was actually thinking of doing a similar mix but with the soft Twinkie version of IMax 3/Imax2 interval only salad with a Low Max blast and a Body Max 2 upper body after each set. Then I'd follow that all up with Tony's AbRipper X (AB-solutely fantastic! Hee!! Hee!!) then possibly a nice MuscleMax stretch.

I'll check out Sharon's abs if they show up in her clips. I tend to not like alot of the intructors ab routines because they tend to do alot of crunches and I HATE crunches. I like doing incline leg lifts and weighted and incline (or is that decline) sit ups and V-sits. That sort of thing. Tony has alot of that mixed into his (though not with the weights, mind you, however you don't need to with his!). I tend to do Tony's or my own Twinkie Ripper version.

Have fun with your Nosebleed!! Let the sweat fly!!
