Appropriate weight training for distance running???

Hey Everyone!!
I am currently training for the Disney Half-marathon in Orlando on Jan.12!!
I'm just a little confused as to what kind of weight training I should be doing.
Hal Higdon, a running specialist, wrote in his book that you should go for muscular endurance, and stay away from heavy weights if you're training for a race. He feels that the extra muscle will slow you down due to the extra weight , and decreased flexibility.
Does anyone have any videos, or training tips for me on how to work out for muscular endurance??

I have Power Hour, CIA Power Bar Training, and Karen V. Great Weighted Workout as my muscular endurance vids.(anything else?)
Does anyone have any other video ideas, or training tips for me?
I'd appreciate any advice!!
Thanks everyone, have a great Thanksgiving!!

PS Because of this 1/2 marathon , I have to keep myself from trying out the new Cathe's and Fitprimes when I get them !!
Give me strength :)

I can't give you any advice, but want to encourage you! Don't worr about those new videos. They will still be here when your big race is over. Keep up the good work, and let us friends on the Cathe forum know how you do!

I'm planning on a January 1/2 marathon. Also did one earlier this month. I do Leaner Legs on Monday & don't do anymore weighted work for the legs. But anything goes for upperbody. Currently I'm rotating MIS & PH along w/ lap swimming for upperbody.

Andrea is also training for a February 1/2 marathon & maybe she'll share what she's doing now. But you really have to figure out what works for you. Your legs will let you know!

The PH & GWW are great choices for endurance (unfamiliar w/ the CIA video). If I was really disciplined, I'd do the GWW floor work a couple of times per week. That would keep the dreaded "runners knee" at bay for sure!

And while I'll need to exercise some restraint, I plan on jumping into my new Cathe DVD's as soon as they arrive. Well, maybe not the lower body pyramid but Boot Camp & Muscle Endurance for sure!

Have fun & good luck!

Hi Gatorfan!

I'm training for a half marathon also. I THINK I want to do this. I think once I'm able to run 10 miles on my long run I'll feel more confident. The St. Louis Annual Marathon isn't until April, so I have plenty of time. A few in my running group are preparing for the Disney run also.

I ordered the new Cathe's also and plan to use all of them on a regular basis with the exception of the pyramid set. I will either set it aside until after the race or use it once a week every other week (just because I won't be able to resist, unless I hide them from myself). :)

For now I am using Power Hour and Leaner Legs for my endurance workouts. I read the same info from Hal Higdon. Guess we're reading the same books! :) I can't recommend any other videos besides Leaner Legs and possibly Body Max. I plan to stay on the lighter side with my weights - barbell no heavier than 20-25 pounds.

What magazines, if any do you read? I'm trying to find one to subscribe to since my library doesn't carry any of them.

Gatorfan - Circuit Max also comes to mind.

Debra - thanks for the reminder about floor leg work. I use PS:SLA, floor portion once a week. Guess I need to squeeze that one in on another day - possibly on my pilate's day. What do you think about that?

If you ladies have CTX and Body Max, another great leg workout, if you get sick of LL, is to do the leg circuits of CTX Power Circuit and Body Max back to back. Use 25 or 30#. Have fun!

Thanks Jillybean!

I'm right in the throes of trading/buying CTX: Power Circuit! Thanks for the heads up too!

Hi Angie

What do I think? I should do the same!

Actually the Pilates mat class I attend does include leg work which has become my excuse for not doing anymore. But it's really not much. Maybe we're touching on some New Year's goals?

Hello Ladies,

I too am training for a half-marathon and wanted to chime in here. When I trained for my first marathon ( not 1/2) I used the PS series with great success. I will still do the PS legs ( the floor work too..) and MIS leg/Buttock segmant ( only 18+mins.:)). The thought of doing leaner legs or anything longer just makes me tired thinking about it. Mind you, I only run 3x'x a week, but once I begin to really get my long run, well, loooong, I find the shorter the leg workout the better. Just my own experience...

I agree with Debra, upper body is "anything goes". I get so thin in my upper body that I really continue to train heavy. I especially like Body Max Upper body ( 34 mins :)), PS and S&H.

Because running leans me out so well, I find I have to be careful to eat very well and do my Upper Body work to avoid looking too gaunt. Good luck you guys, isn't running great?

Hi Debra,

Yes, I'd like to know what you think! :) I just really wanted to get in bonus floor leg workout. I have Winsor Pilate's Accelerated Body Sculpting but I'd like to add on PS:SLA's floor work. I know that would be a looong workout but I would do something like that on the weekends or one of my days off. PS goes by pretty fast to me though! Is this too much in one day? I have this outer thigh bulge that just won't do what I tell it to do, which is slim down.

Any other ideas on how to banish this bulge considering I'm training for a 1/2 marathon? Will LL help? I read in another post that Power Circuit has some nice leg drills. Is this true! :)
