Hi B. Gates,
I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis almost 7 years ago. What really helps for me is to avoid the processed stuff--wheat in all forms (and it's more pervasive than you might think, e.g., in soy sauce) and sugar, most dairy too although plain yogurt seems OK for me. All the (not medical) professionals I spoke to also recommended avoiding gluten. Raw veggies are no problem for me. I haven't found doctors to be too helpful with regard to diet reccomendations, I've had to research by myself to find some answers.
Since I've been eating this way, I feel much better and more energetic than I ever did. I do sometimes have flare ups still (which for me correlate with eating too much sugar, chocolates are my downfall--I'm an all or nothing girl, and once I have a taste of chocolate, it's very hard for me to stop at one and can lead to days of snacking on them, even knowing how bad they are for me!!) and those days I do whatever my energy level dictates. I find weight training and easy cardio manageable. Hope this helps!
