Anyone with Crohn's

I've recently been diagnosed with colitis/crohn's disease and I'm wondering if anyone out there has some advice. A friend of mine with crohn's said he can't eat raw veggies, but my doctor said only if it seems to bother me. That is the main staple in my diet. Any advice? Also advice on energy levels. I work out all the time like most of you, I was also wondering what kind of effect that has. Any advice would be great. Thanks!

Hi B. Gates,

I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis almost 7 years ago. What really helps for me is to avoid the processed stuff--wheat in all forms (and it's more pervasive than you might think, e.g., in soy sauce) and sugar, most dairy too although plain yogurt seems OK for me. All the (not medical) professionals I spoke to also recommended avoiding gluten. Raw veggies are no problem for me. I haven't found doctors to be too helpful with regard to diet reccomendations, I've had to research by myself to find some answers.

Since I've been eating this way, I feel much better and more energetic than I ever did. I do sometimes have flare ups still (which for me correlate with eating too much sugar, chocolates are my downfall--I'm an all or nothing girl, and once I have a taste of chocolate, it's very hard for me to stop at one and can lead to days of snacking on them, even knowing how bad they are for me!!) and those days I do whatever my energy level dictates. I find weight training and easy cardio manageable. Hope this helps!

Hi BGates.

My son has Crohn's. The doctor also told him that he could eat anything he wanted and his body would let him know if it agreed with him or not. So far so good.

He doesn't seem to have problems with energy levels now as compared to back before being diagnosed. He's a junior in high school and is on the wrestling team.

Thanks for the advice, that helps alot. My doctor does not seem to be helpful about diet either. I eat ezikial bread that is from the food for life brand at the health food store. I also read The Makers Diet. Ever hear of it. I just ordered some soil enzymes and probiotics.

Thank you for your response. That is what my doctor said. Good luck to your son. Try reading the makers diet, if you haven't already. The auther had it really bad. Its a great book!

My mother had ulcerative colitis for 20 years before eventually having her colon removed as a result of a performation from an annual exam.

Her doctor advised her to eat bland foods because rough foods (highly fibrous) can cause irritation and bleeding. She was not able to eat raw vegetables at all.

I would play things by ear and if you have discomfort from specific foods, eliminate them from your diet. Continuous exposure to irritant foods causes weakening of the bowel. (this led to my mother's perforation)

Thank you for the advice. That's very helpful. I eat a lot of fibrous carbs. It makes sense that it would cause irritation. I'm so sorry for your mother, that is a result i would rather avoid. Do you think cooking them would make a difference in your opinion?
